Fall colours mid October

I posted the other day about places to stay for a three day stay in the smokies. We are on our way home to Ontario from Gulf Shores Alabama and have a few extra days, so we thought that a stop in the smokey mountains for the fall colours would be really nice. Thank you for all the suggestions, we really appreciate it. We are thinking though, with it being such a busy area, maybe there somewhere else between Alabama and Ontario that would be just as nice of a stop. We are open to any ideas. Will the colours be at their peak a little farther north maybe (Oct 11-14).
Thanks!

Reports from out west say the Aspens are changing now. Very early. That may or may not tell you something about the east. With the unusual weather patterns anything is possible.

I spent last week in the Sierras at 9,000 feet. Very little color yet.

Kentucky and West Virginia are beautiful in the fall, certainly less crowded than the Smokies. Check out the State parks around Elkins WV, Canaan Valley, Blackwater Falls, Dolly Sods Wilderness area.

Natural Bridge SP in Kentucky, great stop.Anywhere in eastern Ky is scenic.Maybe look into sw Virginia too, Mount Rogers or Big Stone Gap.

Trees respond to photoperiod, the day length more than anything else when it comes to dropping their leaves. Leaf abcission stops the production of chrolophyll revealing the other compounds in the leaves. Weather mostly affects the duration of the show of colored leaves.

The normal dates for fall foliage are relatively constant. You should be able to look up the dates for a given location.

If you would of waited till mid October the last few years in PA and WV you would of seen lots of brown dried up leaves on the ground and empty trees. Probably the same this year due to higher than normal rainfall. The change in the smokies runs the same time as areas at elevation in PA and WV. I would shoot for last week September/first week October and keep fingers crossed.
Too many geezers, self appointed moderators, experts, and disappearing posts for me. Enjoy. How many times can the same thing be rehashed over and over?
