Fishing

I'm not sure where a good place would be to post this topic. Please move the post if I messed up. I did a search on fishing but didn't see too much on Florida fishing.
We will be at SEBASTIAN INLET SP, FL around the first of February and choose the site based on advise that is was a good fishing spot.
My favorite thing to do is fish, but it is always a challenge knowing how to approach the local area as to what fish is available and what bait and technique should be used to catch them.
Can anyone that has been there give me some insight as to what I can expect and some hints on how I should prepare for the species that will be available.
Please understand I am from Wisconsin and have no idea how to fish salt water.
Thank you in advance for helping a fellow fisherman who doesn't have a clue for what he is getting into.

While you're down there, spend an hour or two at the McLarty Treasure Museum near Vero Beach and learn about the huge Spanish fleet caught in a storm and wrecked there in the 1700s. People still find coins on that beach.

Take mosquito repellent for the SI campground in the state park even in winter. It's marshy behind some sites.

Good catching!

Best advice. Ask locals fishing where you want to fish and find out what's runing and what bait is working. That time of year in FLAUSA my opinion is live bait is best

There is a website www.bigfishtackle.com they have a state section. Click on Florida and you can ask questions for those on the forum. A good place for localized information.

I've been there many times, but I've stayed at Long Point campground, a county park just up the road from Sebastian inlet SP, but unlike the SP most of the sites are right on the water with boat access.
Although I've fished there many times, I'd be the last person to give advice on what to do. :B
I would second the recommendation of the bait shop. It is just past the Long Point campground entrance road (north of the inlet)on A1A. It is, or at least was, called Whitey's, I think.
I believe you can get a license by calling or going online

Thanks for the info. I will certainly hit the bait shops and view the links provided as you advise. I was hoping to hear from someone like Terry who has been there, and has some first hand knowledge as to what I can expect.
Thanks again, Bill

First, you will need a license. I get mine at the Tax Collector in Sebastian. There is a nice tackle shop on the north side of the SP. I found him very helpful. I enjoy watching the fishermen on the jetty and the catwalk under the bridge. Very educational. As said above visiting the tackle shop is good advise. So is watching the more experienced fishers. Sebastian Inlet is a great place fish or no fish. Good luck.

Here's a link to Florida Sportsman and the area in and around Sebastian Inlet. Take a look you should be able to find whatever you need. They also have people who post there, who are looking for folks to go out with them in their boat.

You can never go wrong by going by a local bait shop, not a box store, and talking with the guys there and see what's going on.. 99.9% of the time these folks will fill your bill with what's running and what they are hitting..Good luck.
