Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area

Thinking of camping at Flaming Gorge next year around the end of August. The scenery looks spectacular on the web, but am having trouble finding a camp ground that is attractive. Can anyone recommend a place they like to stay there?

As a point of reference, I think the Lucerne campground looks ugly - too barren.

Thanks

Mustang Ridge is OK if you want to be down on the reservoir - too hot and dusty for me.

Firefighters Memorial is a very popular large campground with paved sites and lots of pine trees. Has a dump station.

Skull Creek is a nice, small, rustic campground set in the woods.

Canyon Rim campground at Red Canyon is higher, cooler and situated in groves of quaking aspens. The views from the canyon rim are spectacular, especially if you can score one of the rim-side sites.

Greens Lake is also higherand cooler and in the woods. It is a small, rustic campground that offers access to to a private lake with excellent fishing. Within walking distance of Red canyon Lodge which offers canoeing and horse-back riding and a small convenience store. The lodge has a fine restaurant.

Deep Creek campground is a charming and remote campground if you're looking for solitude.

If you want the RV park experience, you can try the KOA in Manila.

the Fire Fighters Memorial campground is very pretty and up on top of a mountain, so it's cooler there.
if you want it more like boondocking, go south of fire fighters camp about 2 miles. off to the right is a little campground, very shady, with a primitive toilet and a water faucet. we've been there twice and had only one neighbor each time.

We went there last year. We actually boondocked right by the lake. We could walk right out our door and catch a trout. What a wonderful place. Make sure you take a tour of the dam.

If you decide to camp by the lake, then you have to get a permit before setting up camp. We went North out of Manila (where you can buy your pass), and headed up the West side of the reservoir to Anvil Draw Road. From there, head towards the water and try any of the little side roads to find a camp. If you don't have 4x4, don't stray too far off the main dirt road.

If you don't want to boondock, I've heard the KOA in Manila is not too bad. You're just 10-15 minutes from the water.
