Fly Fishing and RV Parks - Where in the Southwest?

Looking to get into fly fishing. Long time salt water angler. Now I really want to learn and get into the art of fly fishing!

With that said, I want to take trips with my DW, and two DS (13) and (18).

Wife/Kids don't like fishing too much, but they do like exploring towns, villages, hiking, campfires, etc.

Would love to find places near rivers/streams that provide full hook ups and great FF within reasonable a driving distance.

For now, places in....CA, NM, AZ, and NV to start with.

Later.....Montana!!!

Thanks!

There are several RV parks in Bishop. We like Highlands, directly across the street from Sierra Trout Magnet Fly Shop. You'll be 20-30 minutes from the upper elevations of Bishop Creek. Or if you are good with dry camping, there are a number of campgrounds right on the creek. Also drift boat guides can take you out on the Owens River. There's a wild trout catch and release section of the Owens just minutes north of town but flowing much too fast to wade this year.

Definitely want to head up to Sierras....never visited. Your pic looks like a beautiful area...just what I am imagining.

Can you recommend any RV parks in the area? Also, where should I focus my stay in relation to fly fishing areas?

The Cimarron River where I am fishing now fits this description. Even has a number of beaver dams to slow the flow and create cover. There is snow on distant 10,000'+ Wheeler Mountain that fell the other night. The Red River, Rio Chama, Pecos, and Rio Pueblo are other New Mexico rivers that are also mountain streams.

Looked at some images for Cimarron River in NM.....beautiful!

Can you recommend any RV parks in that area?

Thanks!

Thanks to all for the great info. Appear to be many choices.....even here in CA!

For some reason FF to me would/should occur in places like MT, ID, etc....perhaps from watching the movie, "A River Runs Through It."

I guess I think/dream and am looking for places with meandering streams/rivers, lined with trees and brush; and gently casting into these serene waters.

I'll add the San Juan, Rio Chama, Rio Grande, Rio Pueblo, and Cimarron. Their are public and private campgrounds near all of them.
Safe travels!

Try looking around Bridgeport, CA. There is a couple of campgrounds that we have stayed at several years ago.

You have more than ample opportunities there in Calif. The Sierras, Hat Creek. Give the "Fly Shop" a call. There was some incorrect info above. Some NPS parks, like Yellowstone requires a permit but you do not need a State license. Some State Parks you just need a permit, just check the Regs as they differ from states and parks.

Any particular "fly shop" or a fly shop near my destination?

"the Fly Shop"is the name of the shop. It's located in Redding, Calif. 800-699-3474.
