Rustic Barn in Keiler is just a short drive north of Galena, and closer to Dubuque (with its great restaurants). The Palace CG in Galena is iffy, based on my drive through.

Sorry, I should have added, go when the leaves are turning colors. For Illinois this area is hilly and you will get some nice views, especially driving on rt.20.

I grew up in the area and we like full hook up sites. When we go back a couple of times a year we stay at the Lena KOA, about 25 minutes east of Galena. It is a nice scenic drive to Galena taking either US 20 or the back way on Stagecoach trail. Take time to go to Chestnut Mountain, there is a great Alpine Slide there and the view of the Mississippi river valley is fabulous. Cave of the Mounds is kinda cool too, it is close by. Have fun!

Love this ^^^^^^^^ scenic campground. Funny story, WI state and county highways are letters. The exit to Rustic Barn is County Road HHH. Our GPS said turn right on haaahhh, its pronunciation of HHH. We laughed so hard. Every time we left we turned the GPS on just so we could here it hiss haaaaahh at us!

We did not camp but spent some time at a very nice B&B a (Aldrich House)a couple weeks ago. There are two bus tour operations that give tours of the main attractions. Plenty of things to do. President Grant ritered there and the tour of his home is very interesting. Several well done museums that are worth a visit and some good resturants. The wine tasting place on mainstreet also does a good job, very busy place.

Don't forget to see President Grant's home! He lived in Galena after the war. Free to tour...very nice.

Also LINCOLN announced his presidency run in the DeSoto house hotel!!!! Part of his campaign was run from there. Lots of history in downtown galena.

I second Mississippi Palisades SP. No full hookups, but a nice park on the bluffs about 15 miles south of town.

We were just there last week. Only stayed a couple of days but really enjoyed it.

We stayed at Palace Campground. It's a little tight but clean, fairly quiet and pretty convenient.

The only thing we really did was spend Saturday downtown. 6 - 7 blocks of little shops and restaurants. The park on the other side of the river (Grant Park I think) is cool to see.

We enjoy walking so we hoofed from the campground. The downtown area is down by the river, it's considerably lower elevation than the campground. Easy to town and a heck of a workout back up to the campground. We took the steps back up instead of the same route we took down. I think we counted 275ish steps... legs were a little sore the next day.

The Palace Campground is located just outside of town. It`s just OK. very tight up front and more open in the back, but I think there are no hookups in the back.

Galena and the surrounding area are nice. lots to see and do.

Have fun!

Best site I've seen for destinations is trip adviser. Put in your place and what you want to do. Things are in order of preference.

Not far south of Galena, Mississippi Palisades State Park. Sites with electric hookups, and at least a few will accommodate larger rigs.
