We are looking into heading out to the Smoky Mountains in April of 2014 with our kids. They will be 11, 9, and 5. We want FHU and I would like a site on the river. I am not looking to 'rough it', so any extra amenities would be a plus.

We want to stay in Tennessee close to the mountains. Gatlinburg is out due to breed restrictions for my dog.

I used the search function here for campgrounds and the results were just a tad overwhelming with over 30 acceptable CGs to choose from so I'm looking for any of your personal experience with these places.
Also tried to search old threads and got no results.

Thanks

Did not know about Gatlinburg dog laws. It really is none of there business what dogs you have but that's another topic all together.

Hope you find a campground.

We camp at Pine Mountain in Pigeon Forge. It is as light 6. It is close enough to the action but off the road so you don't hear any noise. Full hooks ups with stream running through. Cable TV, very good wifi through out campground, fire pit and all paved sites. There is a pool at the campground and the owners of the campground own the hotel across the street and you can use the pool, lazy river and hot tub. Here are a couple of pictures from Christmas. Campground was not crowded. Our site backed up to the creek but don't have any good pictures. The one I had was when we were there with 7 inches of snow.

There are some great campgrounds in Gatlinburg as well as Pigeon Forge and Townsend

Gatlinburg has a breed restriction on rottweilers. The city itself forbids this particular breed in it's limits. Campgrounds that are based in Gatlinburg will follow with the restrictions and forbid rottweilers. One of my dogs is a rottweiler and the campgrounds in Gatlinburg will not allow us to stay there..........so we look elsewhere. I found this out when I called the Jellystone and asked. Some campgrounds completely exclude any dogs, others will only take dogs if they are under a certain weight limit, etc.

Surrounding cities do not have this restriction so it is not a problem there.

You have many choices. We like River Plantation in Sevierville and Pine Mountain in Pigeon Forge. Both have sections that back up to creeks or small rivers. Both are very clean and close to all that is the tourist scene. Campgrounds in the park are very nice as well, but have no hookups and are hard to get into. If you want a little different experience for a few days, drive over to Townsend, TN on the quiet side of the Smokies. A good choice there is Tremont Resort. Very quiet compared to Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg and very near the Cades Cove area of the Park. Get yourself ready for some serious traffic along the Sevierville, Pigeon Forge, Gatlinburg main corridor. I know you will enjoy your stay. We always do.

I x2 River Plantation. It is one of the nicest in the area. Good level sites, clean bathrooms with ac, concrete pad at every site, friendly staff, 2 pools, playground for the kids, arcade. It is the only place we stay when we are in the area.

Jellystone is a nice place if you don't mind a little longer drive into G'burg or P'Forge. We've stayed at Twin Creek RV Park in Gatlinburg. It's a little bigger than Jellystone and right in town. There's a nice KOA just down the street from the entrance to Dollywood also.

We went to this Jellystone last July. We had a great site on the stream (site 47). Great owners, great people and our kids (7 and 10) made a couple of friends.

We stayed at creeksidervpark.com Has full hookups cable pool creekside sites and ac in bathhouse and laundry room It's a mile of the main drag and theres a Kroger store not far from the campground. The trolley stopped in the campground and you can take it allover and even transfer over to Gatlinburg if you want. We were there a few years ago over the July forth week. Happy Camping and good luck.
