Heading Home (North)

We still have two weeks before we leave Florida for New England, but I suspect things will only get worse with regards to the Corona virus before we leave. Since we live on an island and need a ferry ride to get home we are watching to make sure the boat is running before we leave so we donโ€™t get stuck living in the coach in cold damp weather.

Being in a class B we usually take advantage of campground facilities as we travel, but seeing state parks starting to close down Iโ€™m thinking we may need to drive longer days and โ€œlive in our coachโ€ to get home.

Is it just me planning this out?

"Two more weeks might see the peak of this virus." That post shows how fast things can change. It is hard to make any plans beyond a few days. But very soon any type of RV travel will not only be difficult it may be prohibited. Some cities have regional lockdowns and may go to large lockdowns. Then it becomes States closing highways to non essential travel. besides the best place to be is Home. If you want to be in a RV move into your unit!

Beware of dirty restrooms and even restaurants on the trip north. Think I'd stay put a few more weeks.
Restaurants? Not happening. Since we donโ€™t leave for two weeks hopefully the surge of travelers heading north will have dissipated.

I think I need to amend my statement on the first page of this thread that most non-spring training baseball snowbirds were sticking with their original plans. That may have been true when I left on Sunday, 3/15, but a lot changed quickly with parks closing or threatening to. Took my time heading north (why rush to colder weather?), and have been overtaken by heavy RV traffic. Welcome Centers for Georgia, SC & NC had all their RV spaces filled when I went through, and the campgrounds I stayed at were full of close to it. The one Iโ€™m at now doesnโ€™t do online reservations (in 2020?), and was too busy to keep up with phone calls most of the day.

OP here... After thinking about the two paths home, straight up 95 through all of the highly populated areas of the East Coast or going up 81 on the western side of the mountains where we will run across substantially fewer people, we decided to opt for Rt 81 even though it will mean an extra night on the road. As much as my wife wants to be "home", the reports from her friends who are all going stir-crazy has her okay with sitting on the beach with a book every afternoon, so we aren't yet planning to leave before April.

Slowly moving north. Here in Savannah for a few days and other than their big St Patrick's Day Parade being cancelled the historic districts were busy. Did see lots of traffic headed north on I95.

We are in TX and will follow the original plan to leave towards the middle of April to head back to MI. Not worried about who's open or closed. If they are closed, we can park at Walmart or just about any parking lot where they would let us. We will be at a seasonal site in a county park for the summer in MI. If that were to close, we could visit relatives for awhile. Not too concerned as we don't go to large cities, prefer smaller campgrounds, green and nature, so we aren't around crowds of people very often. Will just practice good hygiene and use common sense.

I would be inclined to try private campgrounds - but prepared to stay off the grid, if all else fails. At least RVers have this option ๐Ÿ™‚

I can't find it again (darn it!) but I had found a website for Michigan, that showed WHERE most people thought they picked up the virus. Aside from obvious ones like the Detroit Airport; most locations were fast-food restaurants. I'm not going to avoid fast food - but will be handwashing/sanitizering like crazy after a visit. (We drove our minivan to FL, so will need to spend a night in a motel and eat out. Anyone got a spare haz-mat suit? LOL!)

We're not on the road right now, but I think I would check ahead to be certain campgrounds are open. Been seeing numerous public CGs announcing closings for example. Other privately owned ones are not taking reservations in anticipation of closing. Just a suggestion.

We'll be heading home from Florida in a couple of weeks also. We aren't changing our plans for the stops on the way back other than we're leaving here a few days earlier than planned and extending our stay at Savannah and Myrtle beach by those few days. The RV resort we're at has stopped all activities and will be closing the pool tomorrow so not much to do here. The beach is so packed now because Disney closed and Daytona Bike week shut down that it's not even an option.

I am thinking 8 weeks minimum.

Safe travels to the OP.
