If any of you have seen the articles about the mudslide in Jackson Hole, you should be aware that it is across the road from The Virginian! I haven't called the motel to check on things, ony because it is not on my itinerary this summer.

There is little to zero chance of the RV park being affected.

We were in Jackson just last weekend and concur...0% chance.

GOSH! Who would have guessed?

Cute. I'm merely pointing out that the town of Jackson is on the southern end of a valley (Jackson Hole) that runs between the Teton Range and the Gros Ventre Range from Hoback Junction to the southern entrance to Yellowstone. A distance of 75 miles. It made a difference to the early pioneers in wagons.

By all means, avoid the town of Jackson! I love the place and I stay at the RV park behind the Virginian. In that pic it looks crowded. Make a stop at The Million Dollar Cowboy Bar.
The bar stools are made out of saddles. Good burgers.
By the way, the area is called Jackson Hole because its in the valley between two mountains.

I'd like to correct one thing. This is not a "mud slide", it's a true land slide. Mostly rock, gravel and a little dirt, but it seems to be a major movement of earth. I'm in Utah, and we are experiencing slides all over the state, some large like this, some small. One town in Southern Utah has been warned to evacuate after a slide crushed a house and killed two. The state geologists are worried the whole butte could come down.

Remember, Jackson is in a high earthquake active area, and these things can surprise folks where they happen.

For anyone interested, below is a Google Earth view of the area around the slide. North is at the top. The satellite image is from August 2013, so the slide hadn't happened at that time.

The slide is happening above the raw cut in the hillside near the top center of the picture. The Walgreens that is now closed by the slide was being constructed at the time the satellite image was taken and shows as a gray area between the cut and the main road. The house that is broken apart in the pictures in the newspaper link I previously posted is located directly above the center of the cut in the hillside. The Virginian Motel is the rectangular building on the right side of the picture and the Virginian campground is below the motel. The road to the Teton Pass is on the left side of the picture and goes off toward the top.

It is sad. If I remember correctly, it's near the intersection where you turn off to go over Teton Pass or straight ahead to Alpine Junction.

I haven't checked on it, but it could affect the main way to get to town from the south & west. For now they're keeping their eye on it, but it sounds more like when, not if, the hillside will come down (or at least parts of it.) Sad for the folks whose homes & businesses are up there, or in the path.

Since we occasionally spend a night at the Virginian when visiting the Tetons, I checked the Jackson Hole News & Guide for more info. The slide is far enough west of the Virginian and on the opposite side of the road, so that it will be no threat to the campground or motel. The Walgreens that was built last year is directly in the slide's path and has been closed.

It's a small thing but Jackson is the town and Jackson Hole is the area.
