Our family also goes to a secluded place up in the San Juans, only about 45 minutes away. It's so nice to have Colorado for our backyard!!!!!!

We do the same on busy holiday weekends, heck it's our preferred way of camping no matter the time of year. So many choices all with in an hour or so drive, many times one tank of gas is all we need.

It sounds like you all had a great weekend.

A few years ago we lived by a family with acreage and a small lake. . Their friends all liked to camp but did not enjoy the traffic. The problem was solved one long weekend. They all got together, each family picked their spot and together proceeded to make 15 sites. They levelled out each site and ran underground electric and water to each site. They were lucky to have tradesmen among them with ability and equipment. Each family put in $200 to cover costs. There happened to be an old septic tank from the original house on the property. They cleaned it all up and made a dump station. They are far enough from other folk that nobody knew they had done all of this. The "camp" is still in operation with the same families involved. They have since added a boat launch on the lake and a salt water swimming pool. They are a great bunch.
