We are from the Dallas area and will be there in late Feb for a wedding in Decatur. We will be staying at Bay Landing in Bridgeport (an expensive for us Thousand Trails park).
We are normally COE campers, with state parks as our next choice. We usually come back to the Dallas area without reservations and never have a problem getting into the park we want .....
Until the Dallas area public campgrounds were hit hard by flooding in 2015 and Jan 2016.

Hickory Creek COE Park on Lake Lewisville is currently closed due to flood damage. Projected to open on March 1. They are taking reservations for the period starting Mar 1, so there might, emphasis might, be some spots available for drive up in Feb.
The entire Fort Worth District of the Corps of Engineers suffered tens of millions of dollars of damage to flooded campgrounds in 2015. Approximately 1/2 of the COE campgrounds/ campsites in Texas are closed and many will be closed for all of 2016.

Lewisville Lake Park, the city of Highland Village Park - Pilot Knoll which my memory says is lower in elevation than Hickory Creek may be closed; the city of Lake Dallas park is right at normal lake levels, so it may be damaged; and the Hidden Cove Campground on the east short may be open
Lake Lewisville Campgrounds - Hidden CoveThe Vineyards in Grapevine (Leased COE Lake Grapevine park by the city of Grapevine) was badly damaged by the flooding in 2015, especially October and November 2015, and again in early 2016. The park is not expected to be open in 2016 according to the website.
Vineyards CampgroundEast Fort and Lavonia COE Parks northeast of Dallas near Wyle/ Lavon (on Lake Lavon) are open. Depending upon your definition of North Dallas - Lake Lavon is an option. Personally though we stay in both parks at different times each year, I find their conditions to be an embarrassment. Extremely old style restrooms, interior roads atrocious, etc.
WARNING - DFW area COE parks - run by the COE - normally lock the front gate at 10 pm. If you arrive back from a reception or party after that - you have to park your vehicle outside the gate and walk back to your campsite (Many other COE parks in Texas also have that policy.)
Lake Ray Roberts north of Denton has no COE campgrounds, only two state parks - as of 12/29 - the TPWD web site said the two parks were partially open with some sites available. Isle Du Bois camping areas are on higher ground than most of the Johnson Branch camp sites.
Cedar Hill State Park is located on Lake Joe Pool south of I-20 between Cedar Hill and Grand Prairie. That park also suffered extensive flood damage - as of 1/25 - the TPWD web site says only limited camping in the Lakeview, Hog Wallow and Coyote camping loops is available.
Another often overlooked park on Lake Joe Pool is the city of Grapevine park - Loyd Park - may have some sites open -
Loyd ParkCommercial campgrounds - most in the DFW area were not damaged by flooding, because most are not near water. Treetops is an option, but a long drive.
Destiny Dallas Resort is just off I-35 north of Lake Lewisville is an option -
Destiny DallasThere are several campgrounds north of US-380 from McKinney to Denton to Decatur. I do not recommend those because US-380 from McKinney to Denton is a red light breeding ground. There seem to be another dozen or so on that highway every time we come back to the area.
