Hey guys -
I am looking for a full hookup rv campground located near Chassel (sp?) in the U.P. Looking for something between Copper Harbor and the Porcupine Mtns . Looking for something for Labor Day for 2 families in our TT. Any suggestions are welcomed.

Go to RVParkReviews.com and look up these:

Ontonagon Township Park
River Road RV park, Ontonagon
Twin Lakes State Park

Ojibwa Casino RV Park
Baraga State Park
L'Anse Township Park

Both Township parks sound nice and get good reviews.

In September you will not be bothered by bugs. ๐Ÿ™‚

I am formerly from MI and have been in the UP lots of times, from Lake Gogebic to Detour, and bugs have been an issue every time. I have hiked, fished the streams and wandered the campgrounds and bugs have been an issue every time. Maybe its the places I have been and stayed at, but just as a precaution heed my word and take lots of bug spray. Better to have it and not need it than not have it and wish you did.

rexlion,

We've stayed one night at River Pines on the Ontonagon River about 6 years ago and it's fine but the sites are not large and side by side with hookups between. We only wanted electric so didn't check out the water or sewer. 2 couples with 2 TC's. Fairly level sites of dirt and grass with quite a few pine trees in the area. Not a very large CG and we did enjoy our stay. Actually not right on the river as it's across the River Rd from the river but close enough. Close to the nice little town of Ontonagon which is just across the new high bridge.

Very nice long sand beach on Lake Superior in the north part of town but the water is quite cool because it's Lake Superior which virtually never gets warm. Yes, it's between Copper Harbor and the Porkies but much closer to the Porkies.

River Pines RV Park in Ontonagon has FHU. I haven't been there personally though... I stayed at the Ontonagon Twp Park right on the lakeshore, but they have just water & electric hookups (they do have mobile sewer service though).

Bugs are really not a problem in the U.P. in late Summer or in the Fall and certainly not in the winter or spring. Been going up there in all 4 seasons since we got married 54 years ago and certainly know. Usually always staying in State Parks or National Forest CG's all over the U.P. and only a few private CGs because we are outdoor nature loving people.

However, if you really want some bugs you can find them by going into the swamps or walking thru very dense wet woods at certain times of the warm months. BUT, I'll leave that task up to you!

Obviously state parks up in that area are a fall-back since they don't have FHUs. Here are some other options.

The City of Houghton has a nice little park on the canal in town, but there are only 22 FHU sites.

Right across the canal in Hancock is another city RV park, but there is no sewer. The prices are cheaper though.

Ontonagon has a couple of parks besides the state park. We stayed at the Ontonagon Township Park, just on the north side of town and along Lake Superior, but again, no sewer, only water and electric. Never stayed at River Road RV Park, but it shows FHUs.

Phone numbers and web sites for some are available on those clickies I posted for you. Good luck. It's beautiful up there.

Nope! Chassell is 283 miles west of Hessell. Hessell is roughly 60 miles from the east boundry of the U.P. and south on Lake Huron and Chassell is west and north of the E/W center of the U.P. and in the Keweenaw Peninsula south of Houghton and Copper Harbor. Very far apart!
