mosquitoes late june, tuolumne meadows, yosemite

I'd like to hike in the Tuolumne Meadows area of Yosemite in late June. Last time we were there around that time, there was a lot of melting snow, which in my experience, means daytime mosquitoes. I emailed a ranger and he said not to expect snow, but there'd be mosquitoes anyway. Anyone have experience with this?

Don't let the possibility of mosquitoes stop you from doing what you want to do. All it takes is a small breeze to disable them. I dislike using bug spray so I carry head net. It fits neatly in any pocket and I don't have to wash it off.

You might look into "The Devil's Postpile" just off I395 south of Yosemite. Nice hike to Thousand Island Lake and views of Banner Peak and some of the high southern Sierras.

Mosquitos are fierce in the mountains, especially late spring and early summer. I like to hike in August; temps are no problem when staying above 7000 feet elevation.

My experience at Rocky Mt NP is the mosquitoes are fierce when the snow is melting, otherwise not. It sounds like high elevation Yosemite is more prone to mosquitoes.

So do any of you have any other suggestions that might have less trouble in the area? I'd like to avoid a hot place.

We were hiking near Yosemite yesterday -- the snow was melting at 10,500 feet elevation, and the mosquitoes had already hatched!

Bring bug juice, except in mid-winter.

Mosquitoes are Nature's way of telling us that the Sierra is almost, but not quite, Heaven.

Are you referring to last year's Rim Fire up in that area?

Yes, The Rim Fire hit a large portion of north west Yosemite. I'd have to find the maps again but don't think it went all the way up to Tuolumne Meadows. It did hit the Hetch Hetchy area and Carlon Falls. Hwy 120 from the ranger station to the park was the fire line tho it jumped it quite a bit going all the way south to Pilot Peak.

Not near Tuolumne. Yes,come well prepared.

Yes, The Rim Fire hit a large portion of north west Yosemite. I'd have to find the maps again but don't think it went all the way up to Tuolumne Meadows. My wife took a short hike to Carlon Falls yesterday, which is a few miles north of the north entrance on the Tuolumne river. She said the mosquitoes were out in force. I don't know if the fire has upset the equilibrium of things but if I were you I'd come prepared.
