Just brought our RV to Prince Edward Island for the summer season,Hooked up the Shaw Satelite nothing called and found that starting June 1st need a second account that will cost 50% of the package you have at your principal residence. Got every thing set up with the second account a service guy is suppose to show up Wednesday to install the new LB etc.
The big problem as i see it is when we go South for the Winter The lady we were talking to said no more US service. You can suspended this service for up to 10 months so guess when we are ready to go South and we get this second account activated just don't tell them where we are headed and hope that it will work in the US.
Anyone else have any thoughts on this.

It is now mid-October and some Canadian snowbirds must be south by now. What is the status of the Shaw Direct reception?

The whole issue here is this:

Shaw cannot as of May 31/13 knowingly give SUPPORT to anyone in the states. You used to be able to get them to reboot your system but they can't do that anymore.

But you can send a refresh yourself from your Shaw Direct account site or by phone, using automated choices (press 1, 2, 3, etc)

Canuck - I have 5 - 600 series boxes (1 is 630) and they have all been upgraded - was on the phone with Shaw for at least 45 minutes going room to room to update them all. Installer posted earlier that his Father-in Law is in Mexico with an upgraded 600 receiver and the new XKU LNB and still gets what we used to in years past - but no new HD channels from the G1 satellite. My concern was from another site where a poster said the upgraded receiver is capable of shutting down if the G1 satellite is not detected - making the receiver think it is located outside the Northern footprint. Hopefully this theory is just somebody with a lot of time on his hands thinking up "what ifs". I guess time will tell what is going to happen - I will be taking 4 of my receivers to my house in AZ as I always have as well as a new XKU LNB for my dish there. Later

To Canuck - I upgraded my LNB to the triple in May - after the new high def channels came online I was not receiving them. I too was getting the message to call customer service. I called and the Shaw Rep explained to me that my registered home in Arizona will no longer be allowed on my account. They know I have a dish there as I sent proof of occupancy to get the extra dish years ago. After he explained the HAFH program was discontinued my HD channels were activated on the G1 bird. I questioned him for a long while and got the picture that everything I received in years past will work but to never call Shaw from the States as they will immediately terminate my service. Hope my experience helps.

Thanks, I think I got that message from the Shaw Direct Call Center in June when I bought another 600 Receiver from Future Shop & proceeded to initialize it, they said they would go thru the initializing of my new receiver but FIRST I had to talk to the reps at HAFH which I did with much the same message.
Interesting that your message does seem to answer my question that if one gives authorization to upgrade to the new satellite one does not lose the connection to the old WHEN one is in the USA.....am I thinking right on this?
I can test this in a month or so in Florida as the one receiver bought in June is set for the new satellite feeds (I have the others that are not authorized as I did not want to take a chance and there is nothing to gain anyway) or maybe you have already did that?
Thanks!

Sounds like you are OK, Canuck, 988 is just an informational channel for people to learn about the upgrade. no need to phone if you are working. Just don't call them from an American number and you will be fine. If you are taking your working receivers with you, there should be no need to call anyway. just plug and play ๐Ÿ™‚

Anybody that has 600 receivers & the Triple Satellite Quad Output Switchable xKu LNBF getting a message on their Channel 988 to contact Shaw Direct re "contact Shaw regarding my account"?

Just curious as I did not call them, I think they possibly want to upgrade all receivers to accept the new Satellites.....and I sure don't want or need those channels....at least right now!

I think I got it figured out.
The only 600 Receiver that I get the new channels on is the new one I bought last spring (2013-06.) & set up AFTER the major Satellite upgrade.
So I should be ok with the other ones not upgraded. (I think)

Channel 988 on the other receivers asks me to contact Shaw regarding my account.
I take it that means "upgrading" to the new channels.

BTW if I was not ever going back to the USA with my receivers I would upgrade all receivers as there are a lot of good HD NEW Channels now available.

Here is some info on Shaw Direct's site on their Q/A's

Do I need to upgrade all my receivers?;

No. In order to view the channels on the new satellite, you may require an outdoor hardware upgrade and a 600-series receiver inside your home. If you have multiple receivers in your home, you only need to upgrade the ones you would like to view the new channels on. Your old receivers will continue to work and continue to receive the same channels they get today.

I am still not sure if we will be able to receive Shaw Direct in Florida when we return in late October this year hence don't know if we should package up our receivers and take them. We were ok last year using the big 75 CM dish in Florida & our 600 receivers. We were put on the HAFH (Home Away From Home) Plan

Here is our situation, if anyone can tell us what to expect or what they think we might expect we would really appreciate it.
We changed from Bell to Shaw Direct last August a year ago (2012-08) we have the 600 type receivers, got two with the initial purchase & bought one a month after (2012-09) also bought another a few months ago (2013-06.)
The LNB & dish used in Florida is similar to the one installed on initial hookup in 2012-08 except it is the big one (75cm) it has these markings on it: Triple Satellite Quad Output Switchable xKu LNBF.

I see on Shaw Direct's site that one can test to see if one is ready for the new satellites here
When I check as directed on here I get this: ie

Are you ready?
To access the new channels you may need to upgrade your satellite dish, receiver or both.
To determine if a hardware upgrade is needed, simply open your Shaw Direct Guide, navigate to channel 988 and press the Info button on your remote.

Well my receivers shows that I can get the channels....now does that mean we will be out of luck when we plug in our receivers in Florida?

Thanks for any help, comments etc, appreciate it.

Shaw's new satellite is a third. They still use Anik 1 and Anik 2. The new satellite will carry all the new HD stuff and does not have a foot print that will cover much of the the USA.

We have not added the third satellite to our home system since we don't really need it yet and it will be useless on the rig south--we winter mostly in Mexico.

We have many Canadian friends in Mexico at this moment and they report that their Shaw service is still operating just fine.

I suspect we will loose stations as the older satellites wear out. What we will do then for Canadian Content, news, sports, etc while in the USA and Mexico is anybody's guess. We leave in a month and are keeping fingers and toes crossed.

Great post. After 15 pages of goofy speculation it's nice to see someone to sum it all up correctly.

I have shaw and the old shaw will work in the U.S. Only the new dish won't. They charge me 50% less on my shaw satellite as I have shaw cable in the house.

So Winegard called this morning. To convert the SK7002 to Direct or Dish:
New controller module
New Computer board in roof unit.
New Gps controller in head unit.
Change stops on head unit, (dont understand why?)

He said would cost more than buying a new unit.
They may come out with a discount program in the future for those that have already purchased a Shaw model and are looking to add another SKL 1000 or change it out.
Will wait and see!!
