Just brought our RV to Prince Edward Island for the summer season,Hooked up the Shaw Satelite nothing called and found that starting June 1st need a second account that will cost 50% of the package you have at your principal residence. Got every thing set up with the second account a service guy is suppose to show up Wednesday to install the new LB etc.
The big problem as i see it is when we go South for the Winter The lady we were talking to said no more US service. You can suspended this service for up to 10 months so guess when we are ready to go South and we get this second account activated just don't tell them where we are headed and hope that it will work in the US.
Anyone else have any thoughts on this.

Here is the most I can get from winegard regarding the sk 7002 refit from shaw to another provider. They are being very ,very careful in what they say and getting this much was like pulling teeth. I imagine there could be a backlash on them by customers that just installed units with the known intent of using them only in the U.S.

Marc,
The signal is still available and your antenna will still lock to it and work as designed. The new satellite put into service earlier this year does not have coverage here, but the old two satellites are still here and working fine. I canโ€™t speak to what Shaw is doing on the account side of things โ€“ thatโ€™s their decision.

Unfortunately, there isnโ€™t a way to convert to other providers at this time.

Well said, but you know as well as I there are always people that hide under the bed and then when they loose service they ***** and complain. It is worth it to take as many precautions as possible.

It's easy to look at everything from a doooooom and glooooom perspective, but as of yesterday, friends who are presently in Mexico have service as usual.

Yes true as well Ed, but from a Canadian IP. I think a US or Mexican IP will get flagged and your receivers shut down. May work right ok, but this Fall??

Don't forget, if it is a simple refresh, or a programming change, you can do it ON LINE, at the shawdirect.ca website, so you don't even have to talk to a rep.

Basically it is a******shoot. You can take a receiver from home and go camping and when you setup the dish you missed the hit and have to call in for a refresh. I have a test receiver sitting in the Van and have had it work 2 months later when I plug it in. Depends on the cycle of when they send your boxes the new encryption keys. Mine could be longer as it is a dealer account, yours maybe once a month for a residential??
But I think if you use a Canadian phone such as a cell or magic jack, vonage etc to call in for a hit if need be you be safe. Especially if is a number on your shaw account.

To Toban; I really have no idea, maybe the installer would like to chime in. I have never had a problem doing a "self" refresh using a telephone. Doing a refresh I don't believe that gives you any new updates but I may well be wrong.

Gadget Guy:

If there was an update, wouldn't you pick that up when you went on line per se? When the receiver was downloading, would it not pick up any updating at that time?

Just wondering. I've asked the Shaw techs this question and I get
different answers. Some will say if you are off for a couple of weeks, you may have a problem etc. I guess the best thing if you have been unconnected for a few days, is to set it up where ever you are just to get it downloaded so you can travel again without a problem just to keep the receiver alive per se.

I have been told by former StarChoice Tech that it will happen whenever they may have a technical update which is sent out whenever it is ready. No set time and over the years it seems to have proven that it can be anytime.

Okay, I need to repeat my question.

Does anyone know how long the memory stays in the Shaw receiver once it's unplugged? If you were travelling for a week to 10 days and you do not set up the dish at all during that time because you are travelling, will it lose the memory? Does anyone know what the maximum time is one can go without the memory loss?

Around the end of the month, my receivers get an automatic refresh. If I'm travelling at that particular time, I may miss the refresh & have to do it myslf via phone or internet ; although lately both those methods haven't worked & I need to call in. YMMV.
