Oklahoma Is OK

Some of you who are not old and have not lived next door to Oklahoma all their lives may not know that their license plates used to say "Oklahoma Is OK". I thought that was their state motto, but apparently not.

However, Oklahoma Is OK for camping. At least so far. I am considering where to go in 3 weeks when my current park rental is up here in Georgetown, Texas. This is a very nice area, but in May it's going to start to get hot and that means spending a lot more on electricity to cool this RV.

So I want to head north and that means checking out where state parks are still open and most importantly where I don't have to self quarantine. Oklahoma scores a check mark for both of those. I may be headed that way. Oklahoma does requires self quarantine from 6 states, but I haven't been to any of them. Lucky for me I sidestepped Louisiana on the way back from Florida and went to Arkansas. I would prefer returning to Arkansas but their state parks are closed. Still, I might pick a private park there, because it may be the right climate in May.

What is the rivalry with OK and NB?

I saw a bumper sticker on a car once that said something like:
If NB was hell and I owned OK, I would rent out OK and live in hell.

Or something like that. Anybody down that way must know what I am referring to.

Say what?

The abbreviation NB stands for New Brunswick. Canada.

Nebraska's abbreviation is NE.

I saw that. The Texas motto is "Friendship". Pretty lame, in my opinion. I thought it was "The Lone Star State" but I guess that's something else.

I almost forgot, I still have my last old Oklahoma tag hung up out in the garage. That was a long time ago.

I guess the old memory-bone still works once in a while!

Oh, and Tulsa in August? It’s hot, hot, hot.

100+ and high humidity is not uncommon.

I worked for a while at the New London Sub Base and had a sailor say to me one hot day, "I'm not scared of going to hell, I spent a summer in Oklahoma."

We visited Tulsa in May and thought it was great. Don't know about Aug.

College football!

OU Sooners and University of Nebraska Cornhuskers. A football rivalry that lasted almost 100 years while the two schools were in the same conference.

As far as the “Oklahoma is OK” on the car tags, that started in 1967, and it was sort of a shout-out to the play “Oklahoma!” and its theme song, although the correct phrase from the song is Oklahoma, OK!”

If I remember right, the phrase on the car tags was eventually changed to “Oklahoma, OK!” to match the song, but then it disappeared altogether at some point and was replaced with “Native America”.

While “Oklahoma is OK” was never the state motto, it is or at least was the state slogan. The state motto is “Labor Omnia Vincit”, which means "Labour Conquers All Things" (yawn).

When Nebraska and Oklahoma were both in the Big 8, then Big 12 conference they had a great football rivalry. I sure miss those days, some great football was played between Tom Osborne and Barry Switzer teams.

Some people sign off with "Stay home and stay safe." That's unhealthy advice.

Stay active so that you don't get fat and unhealthy.

(You are much more at risk to your health from inactivity than from COVID-19.)

If being isolated for a month or two will make you “fat and unhealthy” you have FAR more serious health issues already.

BTW, “stay home” doesn’t mean you can’t go outside, walking, biking or jogging is perfectly acceptable as long as you practice social distancing.

I agree. I have to drive through there on the way north. Timing is everything. I've missed a couple of "big ones" by only a day or two. I like OK but no thank you, I won't be staying.
