We are in our 1st winter in Texas, staying in the Rockport area. We'd like to maybe make a day trip to the valley and see what that's all about. I'm wondering if we can get some ideas from the veterans of the RGV as to what's interesting in the area and maybe what to avoid. Thanks.

Facebook posts from friends who live within 5 miles of the border indicate they still make their weekly trips across the border for shopping, eating and such with friends.

The bigger issue is folks returning back. Where it was unusual at Progresso/ Nuevo Progress to have a line for more than 10/15 minutes upon return last year, now it is at least an hour or longer.

Questions about the length of your stay in Mexico, what you did, checks of your temperature, and questions about your recent health.

(Those friends are RVers who decided to make Westlaco their home, and take the tag-axle DP to Colorado or other cool spots for their summers. Even this past summer they got out of the RGV.)

As far as things to do, as a space junkie from the 60's I enjoy going down to Boca Chica to see what SpaceX is up to. SN9 is on the pad right now, testing stuff almost every day. Will probably fly soon, maybe early Jan.

When there is no flight activity or major testing planned, you can drive right by the launch complex, and the landing area.

Just hope there isn't another RUD when SN9 flies (SpaceX RUD definition)

Is the border still closed? I've heard conflicting information...ie: officially it's closed but you can still cross.

Ditto!

Lots to see and do here during a good season. This has not been a good season.

activities are much more limited this year and many parks are not open to outsiders due to covid. hopefully this changes back to the old norm soon.

Last year, there is a "newspaper" full of activities within the RGV rv parks. You are welcome to visit any of the events at any rv park. I don't remember if it included other places of interest.
Maybe someone will jump in and clarify.

One place we visited was Iwo-jima monument. There is a Museum there also.
Wife enjoyed old town McAllen. There is a park for bird sightings close by.
Lots to do from Brownsville to Falcon State park.
Not sure South Padre would be considered RGV. We always visited there a couple times a winter.
Check out National Butterfly Center. Mission Tx.

We just want to visit the area. Not looking for a park.
