Sedona/ Cottonwood

Wife and I are taking a 3 week trip in October. In 2006 we took my kids and used this site to help most of the planning for that 4 week trip of a lifetime. Before spending 6 days at the Balloon festival in Alburquerque, we will spend a few days in Sedona/Cottonwood area and 3 days in Grand Canyon. Had my Balloon Featival reaervations for months. Got the GC reservations today. Tried to get Rancho Sedona reservations and they didn't have any for the 4 nights I wanted.
1. What other recommendations for a campsite in the Sedona area?
2. Will have one night between my GC site and the Balloon site. Want to make up some of the distance so we can be at the Balloon Fest by set up time. Any suggestions for a site between GC and Alburquerque with some good things to do that evening?

34' TT. Love to hike, bike, sunrises, sunsets, do like occasional antique shopping.
Thanks all for any help

Just throwing out an alternative itinerary - Monument Valley - Canyon de Chelly - Possibly San Juan's for the Aspen, turning to Gold (usually the last 10 days of September) - then heading to The Balloon Fest.

Sedona and the Grand Canyon are both in CROWD Season, not saying my options would be crowd free but at least there is a chance.

Aspen - San Juan's

All of the above, might just give you more memories, along with Great Sunrises and Sunsets, Quieter Hikes, and areas to ride your Bikes, as he weather will be Perfect!

We really enjoy Dead Horse Ranch State Park. However, we were just in Sedona two weeks ago and swear we'll never return. The traffic was horrendous and the town full of trinket shops. We enjoy hiking but even the trails were crowded. It has changed drastically over the years when we first started going there and not for the good. By the way, if you're planning to come down or go up via 89A to Flagstaff, there will be closings and road restrictions the whole summer.

Dead Horse Ranch SP would be good for a few days in that area. It's near both Sedona and Jerome with more bike and hiking trails than you will have time to explore.
Quail Loop has lots of trees and the other two loops are more open and sit higher with bigger views. There are 3 fishing lagoons in the park with the Verde River Green way adjacent.

Distant Drums sits next to I17. Easy access and a nice and clean park. Might have to drive a little to find biking/hiking.

It's a nice time of year to check out the area.

Distant Drums in Camp Verde is very nice.
In same area is Zane Gray which is also nice.
Near Cottonwood is Dead Horse State Park.

All other RV parks I've visited in area are not ones I'd recommend.

You might try finding something in Camp Verde, of course it would be a little bit of a drive to Sedona but it would be a beautiful drive. :B
