We have an opportunity to travel the above road with our motorhome/car in Tennesee/Kentucky. Is that road ok for this travel? What is there to do there? Are there campgrounds of interest. Thanks

We were at both Hillman and Piney this last fall. We really liked Piney and would go back anytime. Hillman was OK but, the shower houses and bathrooms are in dire need of an update. The rangers at both were great and very helpful. The trace is good road and we toured and drove it daily. There is no fuel or places to eat on the trace but a lot of neat places to tour including the 1880's farm. We really enjoyed our stay. It was in October and then temperatures were pleasant. Mid summer may be hot and humid.

LBL.org will give you info on the Trace as well as things to do along the way. A stop at Golden Pond near the southern entrance to the Land Between the Lakes will be a good place to check in and pick up info on LBL. 1860's homeplace, the Elk and Bison Prarie, and Nature center are but a few of the possible stops along the way. Piney CG is at the southern end of the Park, Hillman Ferry at the North. We used to camp at Hillman a lot, but in the last few years it has become increasingly difficult to book a nice site. We do like Canal COE CG just outside the northern boundary of the park and very close to Patty's Landing in Grand Rivers. Lake Barkley and Kentucky Lake are prime lakes and offer tons of recreational activities. We live about 2 hours east and are headed that way this weekend.

Couple of pics from Canal CG, the Hill site 78 (I think)

North to South-- Just north of the Land Between The Lakes in the Town of Grand Rivers is the afore mentioned Pattis, A few miles In the Park is Hillman Ferry campground with sites from primitive to full hookups. Many will handle large units.20 miles south is the Elk and Bison preserve, A drive thru that would handle a Motor Home. A few miles south is Golden Pond Visitors center with a great history of the development of the area. Further south is the pioneer village. Then Piney Campground which we have never been to. Just out of the park to the south is Dover Tn. and fort Donaldson cival war Battlefield. It is about 50 miles end to end with a 45 and 50 mph speed limit. From personal experience it is inforced.Good road with very little traffic. I know others will add things. We love this place.

For previous posts on this subject search this Forum for `land between the lakes' and read on. Must have is dinner at Patti's 1880's Restaurant in Grand Rivers. They are famous for their pork chops.

We have been there several times but have only camped off the Trace at Kentucky Dam State Park. We always enjoyed it but be careful they had very high water pressure when we were there like 80 psi be sure you have a regulator.

We drove it once with the motorhome. The main road was okay, but there was local traffic including semi's. We didn't find it very exciting as we were not familiar with the area and could not tell which roads were okay for us to go on off the main road, or which campgrounds were big enough for us to stay in. We hadn't planned on the trip, so didn't have information. We had even stopped a the visitors center which has room for parking. Didn't find that much helpful information there either. Haven't been back to that area again yet.

On the way down Patti's 1880's is worth a look. Just south of Grand Rivers is Canal Campground which is run by the Corp of Engineers. Search Land Between the Lakes and you will find many things to do.

Try zooming down using GOOGLE MAP SEARCH in satellite mode or whatever it is called... They probably have many street views on Google Maps as well... We use this tool all the time looking at camp grounds we are going to be visiting... Should be able to walk the entire road through the Land Between the Lakes...

There are camping there but it was always too close to my destination of Southern Illinois on my trips so I have never visited it yet. On my list as well...
