Thousand Islands and then to Maine

We hope to leave Wednesday from Virginia and drive to the Scranton, PA area for the night. My husband is getting nervous about finding campgrounds in the Thousand Islands area and the coast of Maine. We do not like making reservations until the day before as we do not know where we will be. I ask if anyone knows if we would encounter problems with finding a site. We are willing to be inland a bit and just tour the areas. Thanks for any help.

We left Narrows Too outside of Bar Harbor a week or so ago... there were plenty of open sites during our 2 week stay there.

Hi Everyone. You all were right - we cannot say enough great things about Association Island KOA. It is beautiful, peaceful and great hookups and pull thru sites - everything we wanted. Tomorrow is the boat tour of the Thousand Islands and Boldt Castle. Thanks again for all your help.

Hope you have a great trip ๐Ÿ™‚ In the Thousand Islands don't miss Boldt Castle in Alex Bay - very cool! There are also some nice boat trips around the islands. If you need real shopping - big grocery stores, mall, etc Watertown is probably a 25-30 minute drive from Association Island. Feel free to send me a message if I can help with anything - we live in Watertown ...

I cannot begin to thank all of you enough for the great suggestions. We made reservations for Association Islands for Thursday through Sunday and possibly Monday. We are noting the suggestions for Maine too. I am really looking forward to this trip. Thanks again.

We are no reservations people too. Just make sure you are someplace for friday & saturday before the weekend warriors arrive.

I'll second the Association Island recomendation. we were there just a week ago. It's really nice and there were always some sites available.

We were in Maine on the coast the last week of July and first week of August. We were surrounded by empty sites so you should not have a problem for a short stay or overnight. If you plan to stay at one campground for a week or more, then I would make reservations. Other campers were commenting about the empty sites which is unusual for the coast of Maine.

Do you know what area of the Thousand Islands you plan to camp in? State Parks are plentiful ...if you need hook ups they are difficult to get without reservations but you may luck out during the week. Weekends would be tough. There's a KOA called Association Island .. it used to be a privately owned campground and just became a KOA - it's in Henderson Harbor. That is a huge campground and there are always sites available. If you had to stay there you could and do day trips from that spot ..closer to the Thousand Islands would be Wellsley Island State Park if you can get a site ...there are also smaller campgrounds around ..have a great trip ๐Ÿ™‚

Just stayed at "The bar Harbor Campground"

They do not take reservations. You just drive in and find a spot. I can't see any problems this time of year. CASH ONLY

Nice park, super clean washrooms but small sites.

The only times I found any difficulty was on weekends, and even then I had no problem if I called ahead during the morning for a site that day. That said, I usually stop by 2:00 - 3:00 for the night. If you plan to drive until dark, that might be more of a problem since some of the campgrounds I stayed in during June filled by weekend evenings.

If you are willing to camp without hookups, Lamoine State Park in Maine isn't too far from Arcadia and does have hot showers, etc. I also enjoyed both Robert Moses State Park on the St Lawrence River and Southwick State Park on Lake Ontario in NY, both with electric only hookups, and hot showers, all part of a June & July trip to Nova Scotia.

I think it will depend on the area and the campground. Just call ahead to see if there's availability, and if it looks like things are booking up make a reservation. We've done last minute bookings at the Bar Harbor KOA with no issue but we've also tried to book in advance with no luck. It's getting close to back-to-school time so sites are starting to open up.

We never make reservations either and had no problem on the Maine coast two weeks ago.

I see from a previous post you have a 5th wheel. I don't think you'll have a problem in Maine. Not sure about upstate NY.
