Planning a trip out west in June. Will go through Vegas then Death Valley and up through CA stopping near Sequoia NP and Yosemite NP. Next to San Francisco and up CA and OR coast to Columbia River. Do I need to make Reservations? If yes, how far in advance? Driving a 40โ€™ MH pulling a toad.

I can speak to reservations on the Oregon Coast for June on into September for a 40 foot motor home + toad....make them yesterday.. It's a real tough ticket, especially in State Parks.

Have a good trip.

I made reservations yesterday for a campground near Denver Colorado for the last 2 weeks in July. Our first top 15 places we considered were already 100% booked, even if we split the time up between campgrounds and sites. We finally got one for that area after lots of searching.

If you know you are going, make the reservations NOW! If you wait, you'll never get into the 1st or 2nd desired site at all. You may have to settle for #15.

For us, it wasn't so much as the actual campground, as much as we had a "home base" for 9 days so we COULD explore the area.

Tough question ! We did a 2 month trip in 2014 and made reservations for every night. Decided it was not needed because every park had empty spaces. Reservations kept us on a schedule that we wished we could have varied a bit. Similar trip in 2017 with no reservations . Had to change route constantly because all parks full !! I would advise make reservations at most popular areas and then wing it. But be prepared. Have a great time. Looking forward to our next western trip in 3 years.

You are covering a lot of ground and I would think a schedule would be hard to keep. I'd play it by ear and make reservations a day or two out if possible. you are going to have to use the internet to keep up with the campgrounds. I have traveled and made reservations the same day in campgrounds so I know it can be done

If you want to stay at the more popular campgrounds you do. Check the Oregon state parks for options. We have had some luck without reserving by getting in early afternoon and waiting for an opening. June after school is out you really need to reserve. There are some that have a few non reserve sites and a couple that do not reserve an there are a lot of private parks to choose from but the State Parks are really some of the best..
