We are planning our trip to Yellowstone we have reservations at Bridge Bay campground for 5 nights just wondering if we should try to split our time between fishing bridge and Madison also or just try to stay at the same campground so you aren't spending a lot of time moving the camper around we are traveling in a 28ft travel trailer. Coming from Missouri staying in Cody for the first night any recommendations on where to stay in Cody it will be the 4th of July and I was wondering how far out some of those campgrounds book out. After Yellowstone we will stay in Tetons for 3 or 4 nights I was thinking about Colter Bay. We will be traveling with our two kids ages 11 and 14 we love horseback riding, rafting, and hiking if anyone has any ideas they would like to share.

Stayed at Ponderosa in Cody a few years ago. Nice clean park and Cody is a neat little town with some stuff worth seeing. It's a good hour drive from there to Yellowstone but a beautiful one.

Yellowstone is a big place to try and see but staying at Bridge Bay might be pretty good for you. You're right on Yellowstone Lake on the way to Canyon and up to Mammoth, over to Norris and down to Old Faithful. Usually, most people travel one loop at a time. On your trips around the Park, you will find many opportunities to hike, if that's what you want to do but there will also be numerous "animal jams" for bear, moose, bison or whatever other animals choose to show themselves to the tourists. We fix a lot so we go to the Colter Bay campground and fish and when we get a little tired of that we will jump in the truck early and take a little trip to Yellowstone, about 45 miles to the south entrance. Usually, we can see one loop fairly quickly on each trip. We don't hike so we aren't looking for hiking trails.

As for Grand Teton, I don't agree with the folks who say Gros Ventre is closer to the action than Colter Bay Campground. Colter Bay Campground has some electric hookups that were built a few years ago but are partially reserved for folks with disabilities or access passes. So, it's dry camping but they have two place to fill with water and dump waste so it's not a big deal. Cost is $24 per night compared to the RV park at abut $58 per night. If you have the Senior Pass, the campground is $12 per night, a wonderful bargain. Colter Bay sits right on Jackson Lake and has a marina which offers cruises throughout the day, including lunch and dinner cruises to Elk Island, in the shadow, almost, of Mt. Moran. There are some hiking trails around Jackson to Swan Lake and Hermitage Point, you can then drive to Signal Mountain and over to Jenny Lake, about 15 miles away from Colter Bay. Get on a boat at the visitor center, go over to the Hidden Falls landing and hike to Hidden Falls and Inspiration Point. After that, you can drop over to the Moose entrance and take the Moose/Wilson road and go to the LSR Reserve, the newest part of Grant Teton and hike up to Phelps Lake where the Rockefellers had their compound prior to donating it to the Park. They have done such a great job of taking it back to nature you can't even tell there were almost 30 cabins and residences there. After you have done that, it's a fairly short drive over to Gros Ventre where one of the biggest landslides in US history occurred, making Slide Lake about 15 miles off the main road to Jackson. Then, one night, you can go into Jackson and take in the Bar J Wranglers' show with a chuckwagon dinner and wonderful western entertainment with great music and comedy. And, if you really want to be in a zoo, just take your trip into Jackson a little early and see all the tourists, of which you will be one.

As you can tell, I really like Grand Teton and much prefer Colter Bay to Gros Ventre, and yes, I have stayed at Gros Ventre Campground once when I couldn't get into Colter Bay due to construction last year. It certainly wasn't "close to the action" for us to go fishing. Took about 45 minutes to get to a launch area from Gros Ventre compared to two or three minutes at Colter Bay. If you don't fish, not as big a deal.

We have reservations for Bridge Bay now for 5 nights just wondering if we should try to split our time between any of the different campgrounds.

I'm a little confused about which CG you will stay at since you mention Bridge Bay, Fishing Bridge and Madison. As previously mentioned, Bridge Bay and Fishing Bridge are not the same CG but are only a few miles apart (about 5 total, if that.) And you do know that only Fishing Bridge has hookups, correct?

Can't help you on Canyon CG, but I have heard thru the g****vine that sites there do tend to be smaller/shorter. Bridge Bay does have a mix of different-size sites.

Colter Bay RV Park is nice & has FHUs. Colter Bay CG is different - no hookups, but apparently still nice. We have driven thru the former but not the latter. I'd definitely choose Colter Bay for the Tetons (my personal preference); Gros Ventre has a big following, but is located at the south end of the park, while Colter Bay is near the north end.

July 4th is a very big night in Cody, its rodeo that night being quite popular, so you will want to book your Cody reservations as far ahead as you can. Good for you for getting on your YNP reservations for next year now, too!

Here's the official Yellowstone site and it has a good list of things to do:

Yellowstone Nat'l Park

Grand Teton has a similar site, as do all the national parks.

Grand Teton Nat'l Park

Colter Bay RV has the full hookups. The campground is right next door - no hookups but nice.

Personally, we like Gros Ventre campground (no hookups) the best. It has beautiful views is close to nice hiking, has animals cruising through and is closer to Jackson for doing things there, including major groceries just south of town.

Definitely take a gentle float trip down the Snake River in the Tetons. You just might see a moose in the water along with you! We did.

Canyon campground was our first pick when I called to reserve they wouldn't let us book because they said we were to long for the sites it says 40ft total length of camper and truck we have a 28ft camper and a F150 18ft so we would be 46 feet. I have looked at several pictures and videos in Canyon and there were plenty of people longer than us. So I called back to talk to someone else and they told me the same thing I was really upset that I couldn't book in Canyon. Has anyone else ever stayed there that have been longer than 40ft. She said they are getting stricter that if I booked on line they would turn us away when we got there.

Bridge Bay and Fishing Bridge are only a few miles apart, so IMO it would be a waste of time to move between them.

Most of the thermal areas are between Madison and Old Faithful, so a few days at Madison would save quite a bit of driving. If it were me, I would try to get reservations at Madison and Canyon instead of Bridge Bay. Canyon is obviously good for the Yellowstone Canyon as well as down the east side of the lower loop to Fishing Bridge and would also be better base for doing the upper loop.

There is a KOA a few miles east Cody on route 14. Closer in, but still out of town is the Absorka Bay RV Park. In town a couple of blocks from the Buffalo Bill Historical Center is the Ponderosa Campground. Another possibility is the Buffalo Bill State Park, about 7 miles west of town. Call them for info on lead time for reservations for the 4th.

Suggest you fill up with gas in Cody and stop at the WalMart on the west side to restock, as both are much more expensive inside Yellowstone.

In the Tetons, there are both scenic and white water raft rides out of the town of Jackson. There is also a nightly shoot out at the Jackson town square and a rodeo on Wednesday and Saturday nights.

The most popular hike in the Tetons is to take the boat ride across Jenny Lake and hike up to Hidden Falls and on to Inspiration Point for great views across the valley. From there you can continue on into Cascade Canyon to really get into the mountains with not much more uphill effort. Lots of other hikes into the mountains on south from Jenny Lake.

I know there are horse rides in Jackson Hole, but no details. Try a Google search.

Nothing wrong with Colter Bay, and we have stayed there a few times, but our favorite for the Tetons is Gros Ventre on the southern end of the Park. IMO closer to the action.
