Little deck off the rear..

I wanted a small platform off the back of our camper.. Some place to
carry the generator and a storage container with gas cans etc..
Something that could double as a place to stand as well..
(We back up to the fence at Thompson Speedway in CT and 4 of us
would stand on the rear bumper to get a clear view over the fence..
This will be nicer to stand on too..

I wanted it to come in at $200 but I'm a little over.. mostly since
I dont have a welder and have not really welded anything for 30 years.

The angle iron and support rails were $65
The wood was $22
The stainless hardware was $20
The poly stain was $12
Rustoleum black paint was $5
The house call to weld it all together was $125

My mechanic came over and welded everything up and installed it
on the rear frame rails and bumper.. It's very sturdy..
He welded on some spare angle iron underneath here and there for
places to attach ratchet straps etc..
I just finished mounting the wood tonight.. For under $250 I'm pleased.

That is a very nice job....lets see maybe a awning rail near the top of the camper, short awning with the legs attached to the deck, cup holders and off to the races you go....again nice job.

I added some loops and brackets across the back.. each one is rated for 1200 pounds.

I bolted them down through the wood and through the angle iron as well.. Should be nice and secure.

I can use ratchet straps and bungees now with ease.. Already put the generator on for tomorrows trip to NHMS
and it certainly isn't going anywhere.. I'll put the gas on in the morning before we leave.

Oh yeah, I found those reflector stickers at ACE hardware.. I like them better than the red/white tape.

I built something similar for the back of my fiver wich has worked perfectly for years and if someone hits the rear of my fiver and lights up my genny it has a long way until it reaches my truck! Might I suggest you re-locate your licence plate and also the reflective tape can be seen at night for quite a distance, nice job!!!

I like it. Any requirement to relocate/add bumper, since it is a "permanent" extension?

Maybe you can add side rails (with cupholders?) and have a removable rail/bumper in between. It could help keep things in place while traveling.

Just dont take too much weight off the tongue of the trailer and induce "sway" at highway speeds

I put my generator on the front of my truck on a receiver hitch. I have discussed this issue with others several times. Some feel their are risks in everything and go ahead and take a chance others say no way. I feel there is a risk but not enough to keep me from doing it. I also carry the genny on the back with the fifth wheel.

I can appreciate that.. but I tow with a Dodge Durango SUV.
I'm not carrying gas in the truck.. and prior to this, I've been
putting the generator and the gas cans in the camper for travel.
Secured of course, but it still smells like gas when I get where
I'm going.. In my particular situation, this is the better option.

As for tie down loops.. yes. There are 2 on each side just underneath.
I also left enough room for front to back attachment. Once I put the
items to carry in place, I'll see what, if anything, I need to add to
make sure they are 100% secure..

While it looks nice, the idea of carrying a generator with fuel in it and a gas can on the back of my trailer behind the bumper, just doesn't strike me as something I'd really care to do. A possible disaster in the making with even a minor rear ender from someone.

My generator and gas cans stay in the truck bed. On my rack behind the trailer is the cooler, mat, leveling boards, sewer stuff, and stuff I need either to set up or last to put away.

At least if I get rear ended, and the cooler takes a hit, only adult beverages start rolling around on the road.

Very nicely done! Will you be adding some tie-down loops to secure any items carried on there?
