17.5 in wheels and tires

Considering the move to 17.5 inch wheels and tires after a short life and a blowout on a set of Goodyear G614s. Anybody made the move? Any advice?

ABSOLUTELY MADE THE SWITCH!!! An for the same reason. Just look at MY PICTURES and you will see the blow out we had with G614's and the damage they caused. We now have 17'5's with Michelin J's and absolutely love them.
I loved the commercial grade tire so much that I put 19.5's on the F350 SRW. Got the wheels for everything at Rickson Wheel.
Good luck with the upgrade. You will sleep much better at night.

That is correct and you have a top quality RV also that has a high price.

My spare never hit the ground with the original set of GY G's that came on our 07.5 MS. Never a problem.

Ran a set for 4 years on our Avion with never a problem.

Most GY G tire problems are from tires dated early07 and earlier.

I went from G to H GY's on our MS with Alcoa's and no problems. GY does stand behind their product.

We too had GY pay for all new tires and all the damage to the fiver...they have a dedicated claims department. We filed a claim, dropped off the tire at a dealer, got an estimate of damage, and in little over a month received a check for the total.

The way GY stands behind their tires and pays claims, is why we too stayed with GY and bought the G114's...

Chief neon and JerryB, thanks for the specifics. We will start with the dealer here, then go to Goodyear if necessary. I do still have the tire so it will hang on to it until we wind this down.

Never get rid of the tire! Goodyear will want it sent to their factory for inspection. The dealer will not tell you this so make sure they don't disgard the tire. Goodyear dealers should help you with a claim but if not have them hold the tire until you can call Ggodyear and file a claim and they will arrange to have the tire shipped to them.
My last claim with good year was over $8,000.00 and they paid for everything I have never had them deny a claim. I went with 17.5 wheels and G114 tires after my first blow out . Turns out I had three cracked wheels also. Ordered wheels and tires , installed at my campsite and then returned home. 17.5 gives great peace of mind. Cardinal 3450 RL 15,600 lbs. should have never had E rated tires from factory.

Our trailer weight is just less than 15,000 pounds. We have about 25,000 miles on our G614’s. I ran a year with 90psi in the tires and have some wear on the outer edges, the wear appears to have stopped after going to 110psi. I’m also planning to replace the tires this summer. Based on the weight of our trailer should I stick with the G614’s or should I move to 17.5 rims and tires? We put 8-10 miles on a year.

I currently have 35,000 on my Michelins 17.5's and they look good for another 20-25,000. I wouldn't run anything else as experience speaks VOLUMES! I have the Alcoa rims - if you get them also go for the Sure-valve valves as aluminum rims have a tendency to leak around the stems and Sure valve have held the same pressure for a year (120 PSI +- 2PSI).

They sell 17.5" rims with various bolt patterns, mostly 8 lug and set up for dual rear wheels.

If I was to design a trailer, I would use dual wheel type of rim and tire, so that the brake drums or disks are inside the center of the rim, thus less space is required for the tire and axle assembly in the floorplan.

I would also want disk brakes on any fifth wheel over about 14,000 GVWR.

We have about 20k on these G114's and they still look new, but we do have Mor Ryde IS that has been aligned. They were on our previous Bighorn with spring suspension prior to this rig...no visible wear at all. Have no problem with pressure...however pressure will fluctuate with changing temps...that's normal.

We too experienced premature blowout on G614's at only two years. I feel that weight loads close to the tire limit is a factor. These 17.5 tires give more than a 1000 pound cushion on each
tire...the extra security is priceless.
