2007 Raptor Onan 5.5 Gen Issues

Problem started just recently and now my Raptor is at the cummins service center. I have had no issues with my Raptor and had plenty of use the past 8 years. Just in the past week. My gen would not start I changed out to a larger battery Then I finally got my gen to turn over and run for 1 to 3 min. But would choke itself out. Seems starving fuel issues. The fuel is good and I have always ran stabil in it. I've never had issues with wintertime running and my raptor had even sat for an entire year while I was gone overseas and always start right up but recently It was sitting for 4 months with no starts and now brings me to the fuel pump and carb issues that I have read about. I'm curious if anyone has had their fuel system upgraded? Cummins service center said that I would probably need a larger fuel pump, wiring for it and new carb and filter. The other thing was my battery didn't seem to charge up with the plug being hooked up to my truck like it use too, my lights were all on but the battery wouldn't charge? What could this be?

The Cummins dealer service manager not knowing much about the unit only mentioned an upgrade to the fuel system. But didn't really know the details of the Gen. When the Tech got to working on everything he mentioned the same that the pump system was more than adequate for my Raptor. They ended up just doing a carb replacement and a few other things. It was not much $ and I am usually one to get a worst case scenario figure when I walk in and ask. I have read a few other things where guys modified there fuel system. I had just been doing internet searches and come up with some one who had done fuel system upgrade for their RV. I'm not that mechanically inclined to do stuff like that and was just trying to figure worst case what I may be getting into. All in all I faired out rather well and just happy things are running smooth with the Gen.

Upgraded fuel system???? Different fuel pump???
I call BS on that one.
The factory fuel pump is more than adequate to use if maintenance is done on the unit.
I change my primary fuel filter, air filter, oil and filter every year, about 150 hours. I change my fuel filter directly before my pump every 450 hours, whatever the manual says.
I run my genny every 30 days for 30min with the AC on. I have done this ever since I have owned it and I have almost 1000 hours on mine.

I use nothing but non ethynol in all small engines ranger boat bikes generators, trust me the extra money you spend on fuel will save a bunch in a long run plus equiptment runs better. The impellers in the pump swell with ethynol

They had only mentioned about possibly having to upgrade the fuel system (different fuel pump). I usually ask for a worst case scenario figure and the dealer was giving it to me without looking into it. So as the reason for them mentioning few different scenarios of things I may have to expect. All good now and I'm happy I'm getting it back home today.

I appreciate the prompt feedback! I'm picking up my Raptor today from the Cummins dealer. Not as spendy as I expected and I'm rather relived. Their doing some other service work as well on it. Oil change, and filter. The dealer replaced the fuel filters, fuel lines, and the carb. All which was pretty gummed up. The labor was probably my biggest cost and I'm sure I could of tackled the job myself. But my time is limited back at home with many other things I need to get done during my short vacations back at home since I work outside of the country, and would rather have some one else take on the job so I can get the thousands of other honey dos completed. I appreciate the information, Thanks!

Sitting for 4 months, no starts, even with stabil, on a 8 year old carb, that is trouble. My bet, carb is varnished up... bad. Very very common, as you know.

Verify bad carb by checking what fault code comes up...
Checking fuel pump is easy. Disconnect fuel line and put it in a clean see thru container(16oz plastic water bottle..?) hit the prime button and see if a nice steady stream of fuel comes out. If so, pump, filter, and "fuel system" are not your problem.

Don't over think this, many of us have already done that for you. Get a good honest shop that knows how to change a carb and can set the HZ correctly.
Or better yet, buy carb on line for $165, buy a hz meter for $70(seen a cheapy for $30 iirr at Granger), and do it yourself...learn about your genny and save some $$$.
Its a very easy job for anyone thats a little mechanically minded. 2 bolts hold on the carb. I'll walk you thru it if needed/wanted, pm me for my ph #.

fuel system upgrade...?
This is a first, "need a larger fuel pump, wiring for it"...???
never heard of this... sounds like a car salesman selling special scratch resistant paint treatment, or undercoating...?
I'd be very wary of this shop...

I'd bet you have fuel related issue. "upgraded" fuel system? I doubt you need that. As you said its been fine for 8 years, why now? This new fuel with ethanol SUCKS! It eats rubber like crazy. You need to replace the rubber lines with rubber that is resistant to the ethanol and then fix the issue (probably new carb) and you'll be fine. I had an issue with my pump station and it was the line between the tank and pump, inside of hose was totally eaten up. Stabil will not fix this.
