Beware of old ST tires!!

SO I'm driving down I-26 heading to Charleston for work when I come upon a Jayco fiver sitting along the road. I pulled over and found the owner removing the right front tire on the Jayco that had blown, the tread ripped off and took out the fender, damaged the undercarriage a bit, and scratched the side of the fiver. They were 15" Denman ST tires made in Mexico. I checked the build date. 4807. The tires were 5 1/2 years old. He said he recently had his mechanic install Nitrogen in all 5 tires. That didn't do much good. He was installing the spare and I stopped him. The tread was split on it.
I told him the tires were over 5 years old, he said the tread was still good. I looked at the right rear tire and it was dry cracked and under inflated. He called a tire shop to come out and install a new tire. In the mean time, I went to the next exit and brought him back a business card for a local truck tire shop.
Moral of the story. ST tires age. Don't trust them just because they have good tread. Installing Nitrogen in old tires is a waste of money. Find a trust worthy mechanic that would have found the tread splitting in his spare. Properly inflate your tires!!!
Not a good way to start a vacation. I hope he and his family have a good time in Charleston, and he gets 4 new tires!

I didn't mean to imply that was all that was wrong with it. It's obviously worn on one side badly and mis-shaped.

The pic shows the deformity of a slipped or separated belt. The rubber in the tread is ripping and the tread was flat when new. Originally the tire was balanced but I trusted Big-O to use lug centric that I did not observe. Tire was on the ground four years and nine months old when purchased.

Just posted the example to show something to look for. Truth is I could not really tell until I had the tire off for other work.

IMO the tire in the pic looks to me like the inside of the tread surface was wearing more than the outside. Has nothing to do with balance issues and more to do with wrong camber bow or separated tread belt issues.

Your gonna' like the R250s for years of trouble free operation if you treat them right.

And that right there is why I had my new R250's balanced despite every tire dealer saying they don't balance trailer tires.

Yes, I suppose I am nuts for doing that. Anyway, that's what came on this rig when it was manufactured. I know I was taking a chance, that's why I put TPMS on the trailer. I do plan on changing tires as soon as I get home. Weather or not I go with ST tires remains to be seen. We'll see. Safe travels.:)

Did you install the TPMS yourself and if so, what is the cost if you don't mind sharing. That would definitely be a good thing to do.

Yes I did the install myself. I bought the TST system with 6 sensors. The instructions were very easy to follow. The sensors are on the valve stem. I have metal valve stems. I can't remember the price but if you check their website, I'm sure the price hasn't changed any since I purchased mine about 10 months ago.

Thanks for the information - DH just ordered a set of 10 of the TPMS from TST that measures pressure as well as heat.

"Beware of old ST tires!!" common knowledge for those who have been towing trailers for any length of time. A lot of people like to look at the tread and think the tires are still good knowing trailer tires will not last long enough to wear the tread down.
