Can I tow with stock tailgate?

We just bought a new tow vehicle, 2017 gmc 3500hd, and I'd like to keep the stock tailgate with the backup camera. I have about 6 1/2" of clearance between the truck sides and the bottom of the trailer (5th wheel Attitude ). Can I tow this way without destroying the tailgate?
Thanks
Dwight

We do - I just have to be a little more careful. I like the fact that the OEM tailgate locks and it does have the backup camera in it.

Keep it, but DON'T forget to lower it when needed. I'm sure you can tell I have some experience.

Dont think the OP understands what aftermarket tow tailgates are used for. Aftermarket towing tailgates in no way affect bed rail to 5er clearance.

6.5" bed rail clearance is enough but is your trailer sitting level or nose high to get there. My Attitude 5er was very nose high behind my 2012 GMC forcing me to do a spring-over axle flip.

Like you, I prefer my stock tailgate. Ten yrs towing the 5er with no problem. I have a hard roll type tonneau cover that I roll back and lock when not towing to keep things in the bed hidden from view and the hitch covered.

As mentioned above, just remember to lower the tailgate then hitching and unhitching. Many tailgates have been replaced because someone forgot.

Absolutely! Not a problem at all. Just remember to open the tailgate before disconnecting from the hitch, and close after you have hooked up. I know many buy those open gates, but even though we're full-timers, half our mileage is non-towing and I like having the solid gate with camera.
