Dehumidifer

9 degrees here this morning and our windows are sweating. We are needing a dehumidifier but don't want a huge unit which is all the local big box stores offer. Looking on line it looks like most of the smaller units are sold out. We have a Puma 253 FBS so we are thinking that the larger units are overkill. Any ideas would much appreciated.

Prior to getting ours a few years back, I read threads on which one was the best and it appeared then that the Solarius was the choice. We got ours at one of the big box stores and have not regretted it at all. It does help since we do not have dual pane windows which will be a must if/when we get another 5er. The heat that a dehumidifier puts out is a plus, as I see it. The process of condensing water on a surface generates heat. Of course, this isn't so welcome in summer.

Condensing water (into rain) is the power source in hurricanes, tornado's and your everyday thunderstorm . . . but on a very large scale.

In my opinion, the most important criteria in the selection of a dehumidifier is the noise level. Consumer Reports once recommended a LG model as being very quiet. I bought one, and took it right back. It was very irritating. The lower rated Frigidaire model proved to be very quiet. One never knows until one tries something out . . . and in this case, who knows? Maybe it was something to do with my hearing. Or a 'bad' LG compared to a 'good' Frigidaire.

Here are a few things we do:
1) we do not cook inside. If you do, make sure you run your above stove fan.
2) Anytime we shower, leave the vent fan on until all of the moisture is out of the bathroom. If you have not done so, you may consider upgrading your vent fan to a more efficient one.
3) We had moisture trying to form on the front wall where our mattress was up against the wall. I pulled the mattress down and dropped in a 4x4 block so the mattress is off the wall a little and allows air flow.
4) During the day, hang wet towels and clothing in bathroom and put the dehumidifier in the shower/tub. It will dry them in short order.
5) we have a 30 pint dehumidifier. We run it constant at night. I place mine just outside the bedroom. The fan noise is great for drowning out outside noise.
Our last stay was 22 at night and we had no condensation problems.

It seemed whenever I wanted to get rid of moisture the humidity was high outside my rig as well. So I bought a whole house unit at Lowes and paid around $200 for it. Sometimes, it will take out about a gallon of moisture overnight. I can dump the collection, or set the unit in the shower and let the water go down the drain. The draw back is, the unit is fairly big and heavy. But when I want the humidity out, I want it out now.

If you are near a True Value with dehumidifiers and see one which is their brand - it is probably close to the size which we bought in September in Coos Bay.

The Frigidaire which we had used for two years was put on a recall list, so we had to send them the info, dispose of it and recently received our rebate check.

We will not be without one especially since we like to be on Pacific Coast in the winter season.

Since we have ensured to always have a dehumidifier before or after coming here we have had no sweaty windows, nor have had to open a vent or anything like that. It does warm up the room it is in a bit, but as long as we empty the tank morning and night that is not a problem compared to mopping up sweaty windows.

Also without a dehumidifier you might have a problem with the mattress, and dinette cushions as they butt up against the wall. And if you have a problem with sweaty mattress or cushions, simply put something like hard Styrofoam between the wall and the cushion or mattress to give it air space.

I just got this one a couple weeks ago. I've only tried it in the basement but it does what it's supposed to. It does however not have any settings, which I hadn't noticed. it's either on or it's off. There are not many choices when you get into the smaller units.

The problem isn't just the moisture on the windows. There may be 'sweating' going on inside cupboards and closets on outside walls. And there can be moisture forming on the floor, inside or below the carpet.

Moisture in a trailer or MH is a real problem in cold weather. I think a dehumidifier is a very good idea. It also helps out in the other seasons, especially in the Spring on those warm but very humid days.

But opening up cupboard doors and circulating air to warm outside walls and ceiling/floor surfaces can help: if you get the surfaces above the dew point, then moisture won't condense.

Well, just turn on the A/C. That'll dry the air 🙂

You can cut down a LOT on condensation simply by covering windows with Reflextix insulation. It only takes a roll of tape to install it. That and cracking a roof vent should take care of MOST of the problem.

Open the roof vent a bit. Open the window farthest from the vent. Place an electric heater near the window. Use a Kleenex as a draft gauge to adjust how much to open the vent.

Here is the dehumidifier we use and it works great. Also, power supply went out after warranty and the company sent a new one, no charge. That's service I can live with.

We just crack open a roof vent and let the moisture out instead of collecting it.

We purchase a small unit from Lowes. It is a Perfect Home Model and you can probably google it. It was about $40. It takes it a little while to get caught but once the windows are cleared it works great! It is about 2'x 8"wide.
