Dual rear wheel or single rear wheel?

Hello all!! Brand new here to the forum. I have just purchased and brought home our new 5th wheel(with a buddies truck)and I am getting mixed reviews on which setup to get. Our 5th wheel is a Palomino Columbus 42" 7" 2,600 tongue weight,13,300 "dry", 16,600 +- laden. I have my eye on a '17 RAM 3500 4x4 with the 6' 4" box, SRW, with the Cummins 6.7. I have had several people tell me I NEED a Dually, it will ride better and be more stable, which makes sense but, is it really "necessary"? I am not ready for a DRW due to reasons of my own, however, if I am kidding myself, I would like to hear it from others who tow 5th wheels. Thanks!

GVWR on the new SRW GM is the same as the Classic DRW. So payload should be similar. GVWR on the 18 DRW is 13,200 lbs. The 05 DRW was 11,400 lbs. Tow rating is up quite a bit, but thatโ€™s more of a HP thing. The weight carrying is what really is the issue with 5th wheels.

X2!
EXACTLY, weight not talking listed payload to GVWR, talking respecting wheel and tire ratings!
It really scares me that some donโ€™t have a clue as to how much their tires and wheels are rated to carry.

No brainer with a TC. Chris

Frankly, I think a lot of this discussion really depends on what any particular person wants to tow. Personally, with my old low-profile Komfort, I felt almost zero side forces, either from cross-winds or from big-rigs passing me. My new KZ is about 18" taller and 3' longer, and I =can= definitely feel it more than the Komfort, but not to the point that I feel unstable, at all. Given that I'm actually a bit over my "perfect" length, am towing a "light" FW and have virtually zero desire to go bigger, an SRW suits me just fine. Yeah, I'd much prefer a 1t SRW, even with a 10.5k GVW FW, but I don't have one and can't afford one, so I stick with my trusty '02 2500.

2017 Duramax 4x4 3500, Long Box, Crew Cab Dually is rated for 22,700 lbs. max 5th wheel trailer. I am just citing one manufacturers literature. Don't shoot the messenger.

Not shooting the messenger, I'm just showing that not posting all the facts makes things look different than it really is. So by the literature you posted GM's 2017 DRW truck is no more capable than their 2006 DRW?

"This is very true. A new srw is way more capable than an 06 dually."

According to the GM tow charts, a 2006 Duramax 3500, Long Box, Crew Cab Dually is rated for 22,700 lbs max 5th wheel trailer. Same truck in a 2017 Single Rear Wheel version is rated for 17,000 lbs max 5th wheel trailer.

Hook them up and tell me what you think. I'm towing over 20 with my SRW with zero issues with handling the weight.
About the ratings.....what is the ratings on a 2017 DRW Duramax? Do you honestly think the Ram and Ford is that much superior?

A common observation. You don't know what you have been missing till you have it.

That's why you need to go get you a NEW SRW and compare it to your old 2006 DRW. You don't know what you are missing.

This is very true. A new srw is way more capable than an 06 dually.

I tow a 16000 lb fiver with my 2017 F350 SRW. I can hardly tell I'm towing anything when the trailer is properly loaded. But, sometimes I haul an 800 lb motorcycle on a lift that attaches to the trailer frame.... then it doesn't tow so well. Witb the bike on the back I put 400lbs of concrete blocks in the bedroom closset which helps quite a bit.
