Generac will not start / smell of gas

Over the weekend I ran the Generator for about 2 hours all of a sudden it just quiet like it ran out of fuel has 1/4 tank in it. Tried to restart over and over and started to get a strong gas smell (seems like the carb is flooded). I let it set over night and still nothing. Any help would be great. Model # 4700-0

Sorry mods I original posted this in the Class A forum.

I would not have guessed it either. But it makes sense now that the gas was coming out of the carb.

if your main fuel tank is at a quarter of a tank the gen set will not run ,safety feature.

motorhomes yes, trailers no.

Every absolute statement has an exception. :B

My trailer uses a single fuel tank, the generator can't draw below 1/4 tank. The fuel station can draw to empty.
Both my TH are the same way, you cannot run them lower then a 1/4 tank. One is a 5er the other a TT.

Glad you found the problem. I never heard of a rocker arm coming off before.

Would have had compression but fuel could not get in because valve wouldn't have been opening

Thanks everyone.

How did that happen? Would never have suspected something like that! So the engine was missing one key ingredient, COMPRESSION!

Bad fuel pump? Crimp in the line? Trip to the dealer if it's beyond your capabilities.

Bad fuel pump as in getting to much fuel?

Your trailer is plumbed incorrectly/backward. The generator should have it's fuel pickup low enough to draw all the way down and the fuel station should quit at 1/4 tank to prevent the genset from running out of gas.
The guage shows over 1/4 tank and no start.

Your carb float may be stuck causing the engine to flood.

Wrong, it would run or at least try to with starter fluid. The old story, if you have gas, spark and compression it MUST run. Try the starting fluid again with the air cleaner removed, just a short squirt and open the butterfly manually, see if it fire. If it fires I'd suspect carburetor issues. If it doesn't then I'm at a loss without being there.

I did the starter fluid without the air cleaner on. I cant get a good look into the carb because of how its in there. looking at owners manuel it says to check the #14 wire. i traced it as best i could to a temperature control switch. it says this has a normally open contacts. The contacts close if the temp gets above 284 could this be the issue stuck in the close position. if it gets to approximatly 284 deg. it initiating an engine shutdown.

Not wrong. If it has all three things but is flooded from a stuck float, it will not run nor will it attempt to start with starting fluid.

well it did it again. tried to start it and it just cranks. pulled fuel line (fuel comes out when cranking) got spark (pulled the plug). got half tank of fuel. tried a little starting fluid (no change). every time this has happened it was running and just up and quit like it ran out of fuel. I'm at a loss. I can get a multi meter just dont know what to check.

Thanks.
