Having to be towed with 5ver. Has it happened to you?

I had a close call a couple of weeks ago. My truck lost power and I thought I was going to be stranded. Luckily I was handy enough to do an on road repair and limp home. We were in the puckerbrush of Vermont so it would not have been good. It might be worse if it happened on a busy road or interstate. I don't like to be on the roadside with cars passing by at 70 MPH.
It got me thinking though. How would the truck and trailer combination be towed? The driveshaft would have to be removed and I assume it would be on a wheel lift type tow truck. Typically will the towing company drop the trailer off in one spot and the truck at a repair shop or would they both go to the same place? I have a dog along most of the time too. To those of you who have had this happen how was the experience? Did you have Coachnet or Good Sam? If the repairs took a long time did you stay with the trailer at the shop or find someone to move the trailer for you?

It has never happened to us, but Coach Net and GS ERS have both come to our aid when we had trouble. I now have Coach Net and "won't leave home without it"....For $99 a year, I believe it's well worth the investment.."just in case........."

We stopped in FL last winter on a Sunday evening. We called GS and they couldn't get there for an hour. The police wouldn't let us wait and called a county tow truck. They towed both connected to a campground and we had to pay them $265 cash. We called GS in the morning and they came back to take the truck to a dealer. Good Sam reimbursed us the whole charge. Great service!

Truckasaurus broke down last year on an Interstate onramp. It took a few calls, but I found a shop that sent out an enormous Class 8 tractor to tow us. He dropped the driveshaft, picked up the front of the truck on a wheel lift and towed the entire rig to a nearby shop of my choosing for repairs. We were over 100' long and the tow truck didn't even notice the 'puny' weight of my setup.

On a related note, the fine folks at Browning's Alternator & Starter Exchange in Virginia Beach http://www.browningsalternator.com dropped everything they were doing and busted their butts to get me back on the road in about an hour on a Saturday morning. I can't say enough about those folks!

Some have had a commercial-sized lowboy show up and load the entire rig on it.

Hope they don`t go under an overpass with that....16-17 foot would be a little high....

This happened to me last summer on Wolf Creek Pass in Colorado. I was/am a Good Sam's member, they sent a flatbed for truck and another dually for the camper, and as mentioned above they towed the fiver to a nearby KOA campground and the truck to a Chevy dealer. (I have a toyhauler, so just unloaded the bikes and rode around while they worked on the truck. It was what I woiuld call, 'an excellant response' from Good Sam's. I'll be a member for life!

Purchased some real trashy diesel in New Mexico, and Good Sam Roadside Service sent Little John's Towing out to Cline's Corner to get us. He hooked on to the front of the truck (don't remember dropping the drive shaft), left the 5er hitched and towed us to Moriarty,NM. Dropped us and the trailer in the Holiday Inn parking lot and then towed the truck across the street to the Chev dealer. They had us back on the road by noon the next day, after a fuel system cleaning and a new fuel filter. DW will not let me not renew our Good Sam Roadside Service and I highly recommend Little John's Towing in Moriarty.

I rode with the other driver as he towed the 5er to the nearest KOA, waited while I leveled and connected electric, then took me to that dealer.

That was excellent service!

Not yet. (Knocks on wood)

Only breakdown has been a start battery that was discovered as we checked in. (jump start, no tow)
And the fuel pump went out while camped. Local truck towed me to a local shop. paid cash.

That's the beauty of a 4 whl drive. We just shifted transfer case to neutral and they towed both. Both times, they towed us to a CG first, then truck to a shop.
