In search of my first fifth-wheel toy hauler.....

Hey guys, new to the forum. Looking to purchase my first fifth-wheel toy hauler. It's been a struggle to find one that meets all of my requirements. I'm looking for one that is 3/4ton towable, has a 12' garage, is 102" wide, and has an enclosed bathroom. That search has led me to the Nitro XLR 305VL5. It looks like I can pick a nicely loaded 2015 for about $42k. This floor plan was newly released for 2015, so unfortunately I haven't been able to get on feedback on how well it's liked. But, I'm curious if anyone has had any experience with XLR Nitro trailers? Quality? Any Issues? Thanks for your input.

Not at all.

My trailer has 2670lbs of pin weight totally empty.
I put 150 gallons of water in it, which are in front of my front axle (pin weight goes up)
I then put my 2800lb sand rail in the trailer, majority of which is behind the rear axle, my pin weight goes up to 3400lbs.

This is why I have a dually. Don't have to worry about this stuff.

With nothing in the garage, my pin weight is 21% of the total weight and I believe most toy haulers run about the same. Putting something in the garage will reduce the pin weight but not by much.

One of the better non 5th wheel toy haulers... No need to worry about pin weight...WD hotch all the way and you get full size camper in 30 ft... Hey bring the kids or friends...

You are adding weight and that helps reduce pin weight, but if you are like us, there are times we don't bring the side X side, so it is added bumper weight for us.

Mfg. 'magical' max tow rating is based on a 'base model with 150# driver and 20# of cargo'

A 12K trailer will get you a 'wet pin' of 2400#

With your 'upgrades' you will be able to handle a higher pin weight BUT that doesn't change what your truck GVWR is.

And don't discount total weight that gets added....folks have a tendency to pack. Guesstimating usually is way low..........little here, little there pretty soon 'loaded'

But with your statement.

I could personally care less about the legal side of it.

Maybe you could school me a little on the GVWR side of things. I was under the impression that my truck was rated to tow about 14k. This model is just under 11k empty. I would never come close to putting 5000lbs in it. Maybe a max of 3k. I have upgraded the rear end to 3500SW specs. 3500 leaf packs, air bags, and ditched the factory aluminum rims which were only rated for 3042lbs a piece. The rims I installed are rated for 3400lbs and the tires for 3500lbs. I weighed the truck and it weighs 7100 full of fuel with the hitch in and 3 passengers. That leaves me with about 2100lbs for pin weight going by the factory specs on the sticker in the door.(Even though I think it will handle a little more with my upgrades). I could personally care less about the legal side of it. I'm more looking for my own piece of mind. Other than the weight issues, any reviews on the quality of the Nitros in general?

GVWR of 16K or so.........and your 07 2500

I would continue looking.

You stated you wanted one 3/4 ton towable.
With your 07 that means GVWR of 12K or so to be within ratings/available 'actual' payload.
