Tape measure. No OEM shocks just brackets . My axles are under Springs.

So in effect the shock has acted as a limit to how high the axel can react to a bump up.

In fact drivers side rear the shock was with in 1/4 inch of full compression.
Shock absorber in looks only.

My Conclusion is this. Not enough distance was provided by brackets for original shocks. There for I am welding a new bracket on old one to add travel for the new shocks.
All original shocks show damage from collapsing to 0 plus.
Very poor quality work by manufacture.

That shock would be even longer.
I phoned Monroe. The 555001 has 4 inches of play.
With new springs installed about 10,000 miles ago (and I added an extra leaf)
Now with the suspension bearing the weight of the trailer there is only about 3/4 inch of compression left!!
This can not be good. I phone Monroe. They tell me they like to see 60% possible compression left !!

Ok Cummins about to install the number on the old is 122108.
The Munroe number 5550001 seems to be about 1/2 inch longer compressed.
Might this be a problem?

Monroe has a chart showing connection types and compressed/extended lengths. I doubt it would matter but check specs to be sure.

More info. Obviously the old shocks were bottoming out as the cupped washers are driven down over the nut on the end of the tube.
I installed the new shock. Installed the wheel, let down the jack.
Now I measured the new shock with weight on it. It is with in 1/2 inch of bottoming out!!
Not good.
Iโ€™m considering this. Welding a short piece of angle iron onto the top bracket and adding 1/2 inch or perhaps a full inch distance between the to mounting positions.
This would also give a more vertical position to the shock too.
Thoughts?

There might be a Monroe equiv. as they make a lot of trailer shocks/kits.

I believe that Monroe discontinued trailer shock kits years ago.

Monroe quit makeing the mounting kits but still make rv shocks. Our Jayco came with mounts but no shock. I followed Monroes instructions for measuring and my local auto parts guy matched up what I needed. I thought I still had the model but no can find.
It did make a difference on stuff moving around . However from vidideos on utube the Joyriders or whatever they are called would be the better way even tho more $. Having the mounts the shocks were worth it but if you have to go with the lci kit would go better.
