Never Lube Bearings

I have a two part question.

Has anybody replaced Dexter never lube bearings themselves? If so what did you use to press out the old and press in the new bearings?

Has anybody had never lube bearings replaced at an RV shop? If so when was it performed and what did the job cost?

My preferred RV shop does not do never lube bearings and I received a $1,250.00 estimate from camping world. That seems high to me.

winter friend bought a new hitchhiker . towing south on I-5 from Medford Oregon for their first trip cars were honking and waving for him to stop. He saw the smoke when he pulled over. After it was carried away because of a burned never lube bearing and was found it was dry. All 4 were replaced but how did this fifth get from the factory to Medford Oregon??

I just pressed the last two of mine today. I had one fail a couple years ago. Two weeks ago a second one was changed on the way to the races in Kansas city. I had a hot hub that turned out to be the brake magnet. I had the extra bearing along so changed it at that time. I found a shop with a press to change the bearing. I did the rest of the work of removing the hub and drum and reinstalling.
I disassembled the two that I removed today. A bent screw driver punch used on the inside of the inner race will punch out one side of the bearing and the seal. The other side can then be punched out.
These are on a 2002 unit with the 50mm bearings. The grease was stiff and black. They were due for replacement.
However, I think after looking at these bearing that they could be disassembled, cleaned and new grease packed into the bearing. New seals would be desirable.
That's what I plan to do with these and they will be come spare bearings.

The 50 mm bearings have few failiers and the smaller 42mm mainly from offset rims. You are supposed tu check for play every year.

I would call NevRLub tried and trued. Been around for almost 20 years. You need the larger brgs. on larger/heavier rigs now a day. Don't let the few failures scare you off. The lower maintenance needs are something to think about. Just sayin' rockin'

Do the Trailer mfgs. force the never lube bearings on the customer or can you order the trailer with out them. I don't think I want the risk of owning these bearing and prefer the old fashion tried and true bearings.

That's why we are on are 3rd set, went to Kodiak Disk brakes. They call them by a different name but it's the same 50mm bearing.

Before you spend a lot of money having Nev R Lube bearings installed consider a Disc Brake Conversion Kit for $1950 that has the bearings already pressed into the new integrated Rotor/Hub assembly.

My RV has the never-lube bearings. I bought a replacement hub with bearing from finditparts.com for $186.00 and carry it with me when I travel. They also carry the 50mm bearing for $119.00. I also carry a spare bearing too. Finding replacement parts on the road would be a nightmare.

I have heard the horror stories but I have never had a problem.
