Planning 1st Outing - SoCal

Hi Guys,

Finally relocated to SoCal and now planning my first outing with the family. TH is stored in Mission Viejo. Can you recommend areas that are within 3 hrs drive. I have small kids so don't want to over do it on our first trip distance wise. My concerns are safe areas and accessibility. It could be either ohv or lake. Plans are for Labor Day...usually arrive before the holiday and leave after. Depending on the location I would love to take all my toys. Is there a place that you can bring four wheelers plus do a little fishing or swimming?

Thank you!

El Mirage and California City.
Safe, hot and not too far.

Bypass the RED or Green sticker get a 2015 California Nonresident OHV Use Permit . It well work for a RED sticker bike out of season. And you won't need current registration to do so.

I'm heading to Oregon this summer with the family for a month. This is what I'm doing with our bikes while there.

My suggestions were assuming that he had a California address. But, since he just moved to the state, your suggestion is a great one.

Depending on where you are riding, there may be restrictions on the type of vehicle you can use. California has red and green sticker registration. Green sticker is year round, along with plated dual sport bikes. I can't recall ever seeing plated ATV's or side by sides in this state.

Most riders I know put their bikes/quads/toys away for the summer. Any of the desert areas will be to hot. The mountain riding is better for the summer, but the locations are few and further away. Look to Big Bear, Mammoth, Kennedy Meadows or Pismo(Oceano Dunes).

Or Arrowhead http://www.riderplanet-usa.com/atv/trails/info/california_12424/ride_1c47.htm

All of these areas are patroled so you need you green sticker and you'll need to buy an adventure pass.

Or if your above a novice Kennedy Meadows: http://www.riderplanet-usa.com/atv/trails/info/california_06187/ride_07c1.htm

Kennedy meadows is dirt bike only and about 5 hours out.

Someone mentioned Borrego springs....too hot right now (wait until October-april) and must have a plated vehicle...just down the road from there is Ocotillo Wells SRVA and much better suited, wait for fall. As with Johnson Valley, Spangler Hills, Jawbone/Dove Springs....al areas to research for the Fall/winter/spring.

You are right dont really want to be in the 110+ degrees with little kids.

Kennedy Meadows It's 83 at 1pm. It's best to ride in the morning when it's cool. I've been going there for years!!

I was reading about Lake Isabella and also saw on Google sat map RVs along the lake shore. Any advice!

The water is WAY down due to the drought and issues with the dam. I camped along the shore a few years ago, all was good until Friday night, then the "locals" from Bakersfield arrived in droves and set up camp wherever they wanted, including in between me and my buddy (there was about 10' between our rigs and they squeezed a tent in. Plus the wind comes up EVERY afternoon about 100 and it blows pretty good until after sunset.

There are a few short routs where you can run to the river from Trow overflow with quads and UTV as well. But it's really geared for motorcycles. But don't let that stop you from going. If you ride early you'll beat the heat.

This time of the year, you want to stay away from the deserts and stick to the mountain or beach (Pismo) regions unless you prefer 115+ temps.
