Quality control problems - rant

Just want to rant a little. It's crazy how the manufactures have almost zero quality control now, much different than even 4 years ago. My first toy hauler I bought in 08. That one had no problems when I bought it, but about everything broke while using it. Fine, it was a cheap, bottom of they line toy hauler, I get it. My second one I bought new in 2013 and it had no problems from the get go and very minimal things broke along the way. But my new toy hauler....

I picked it up a couple weeks ago as a 2017 that's been on the lot since February. The list of stuff that's broken is long, most notably the line to fill the water tank was cut at some point and the repair job was awful. The carpet is coming apart, charging station doesn't work, one screen isn't on the tracks, 2 of the blinds won't stay up, one drawer is mounted crooked, the caulking is completely missing on one bump out, the other one it is about 1/8 inch too high, faucet opens in travel (when turn pump on it starts spraying), the beds don't go up at the same time as they are off, the TV is mounted where it rubs against the cabinet, the outside front storage door is crooked so it's very hard to close and latch, the place where the pump is I found 3 random screws and an extra wire and a ton of sawdust, and 2 screws were dropped in the ramp door so it scratched the inside of where it connects to the trailer.

So I knew quality had gone down in the last few years. My brother has the same brand of toy hauler and bought new last fall on one that he ordered, so he picked it up right after it was delivered, almost the same issues. Same with a few other friends in the last couple years. It seems like every one of these now days is just a mess. I do have an appointment in 2 weeks to get the stuff fixed so all will be good. But I figured I'd rant because I can.

And these were anywhere from 2004 through and up to a brand new 2018 .
The biggest mess up is the rear door pulling away from the frame/housing.
I mean they do realize people are driving rzr's , quads and motorcycles up the ramp door into the garage part !
At least 6 of them you can stand in the back with the ramp door closed and see daylight from around the door !

A good friend just bought a 30 something footer 3 axle TH and just walking through it I could point out a dozen things wrong with it...
I pointed out a couple things and I could see his attitude changed abit , so that was my cue to shut my trap...

Sad times we are living in for sure... Pay big bucks for a hunk of junk ...

Threads on there about that as well... Rear flimsy doors getting wonked by the weight of rec vehicles getting loaded and unloaded and not sealing up anymore, hinges breaking off, all sorts of nice things...

My 1st hauler was a Forest River...after the 1st uear the rear opening was 3" outa square. I could close the door and stick a prybar between the door and jam, litterall could rack the rear with my pinky.

I almost messed up again. Had deposit down on a Continental Cargo Race hauler b4 I bought the Voltage...they are made by FR

If you really want to read about issues with Forrest River Products, I suggest you drop into the Forrest River Forum as a lurker and read some of the tales of woe. From breaking frames on pull behinds to cabinets falling off to windows falling out or installed upside down..it's all there plus the junk tires blowing up. All good reading....lol

Again, I will say I have had no issues with my FR unit but it must have been assembled on a Wednesday after lunch but before 4PM, either that or the crew that built mine weren't 'Amish Craftsmen' but rather Gentiles. Mine has been turn key but a bunch aren't, which leads me to believe that quality control is non-existent.

I just took my attitude in a few months ago for warranty work. One of the things on the list was that I had a heavy smell of propane coming from the compartment. They replaced the regulator. This weekend I was checking my tanks and when I moved the hose I could hear gas hissing out. Man was I P.O!!! If I took it back, would they fix it? Yes of course they would, but it's not worth my time and cost of diesel so they can do it wrong all over again. Ran down to my local RV shop and picked up a new hose and fitting for $15. I tested for leaks with soapy water, done and done. Sorry I was just venting.

I forgot to mention that I also fixed my AC the same day I had the gas leak. It was cycling off and on for a couple of seconds. It would happen randomly. I started to pushed on the wall that thermostat was mounted and noticed it would cut in and out more often. I took the thermostat off and noticed there were chaffed wires. Not only were they chaffed but they were only making contact with a few strands. I cut the wire and started fresh. I let it run for a few hours and the cycling seems to be gone.

Ownership is only a payment book away.....:E

Like my old (expensive) hobby of snowmobiling. Snowmobiles are the only motorized vehicle that I know of that depreciates 50% when you take it off the showroom floor...

Great investment eh?

Right. I think part of the issue is the factoriesb and shoddy work from the plant. The other part of the issue is the dealers and their shoddy work.

Boats aren't much different. My buddy dropped almost 200k on a MasterCraft and the engine died on lake his second ride.

Boats, more than RV's are a money pit. I have friends with Scarabs and Cigarettes and I like being a guest but pride of ownership, no way.

"Anyone with experience in how Eclipse is doing quality-wise during this "boon to business" time? My target is an Attitude or Iconic 28-32-foot 5th wheel."

Sir,

My wife and I have owned an RV of one type or another for close to 40 years. In 2014 we bought a brand new Eclipse Attitude 32Ak 5th wheel from a dealer in Sacramento.

It has been the worst RV experience of our lives. The quality control on these units is abhorrent. I bought an extended warranty and since the problems were, "manufacturing defects" they bowed out.

Problems include a window installed in a hole cut improperly, causing premature failure of the window seals, unsealed and covered exposed plywood edges the entire length of both sides of the coach, improperly installed cabinet hanger rods, Coax run throughout the trailer not connected to anything I can find, the list goes on.

I had the dealer install a second battery and an underbelly seal. Before I had 10 miles on the road the underbelly seal was falling off.
it was screwed to air...no backing.

The second battery was attached to the first via romex.
Based on this there was no way I was going to allow them to tackle the window repairs and fixing the subsequent delamination.

The convertible sofa on the side wall is screwed into the aluminum studs via #10 sheet metal screws. They fell out within two months. I would up putting 1/4-20 nut-serts into the studs and using grade bolts to fix the problem.

I had a local RV repair facility that has a reputation for outstanding work take pictures of the problems and write up an estimate for repairs. The estimate came in at $2500. I sent all of this to Eclipse, via Email.

They wouldn't cover it.

They wanted me to bring the coach to their facility in Riverside, Ca.

This is about 700 miles one way, plus my time, $, etc.

Ultimately we agreed to have one of their drivers take the coach down, then they notified me they would not warranty the repairs they were going to perform...

In the meantime, I heard from another Eclipse product owner that this was a classic ploy, get your coach down there, open it up, claim the problem was not their fault, and demand payment for repair to put the RV back together.

I wound up paying out of pocket.. to my local tech, who warrants his work. I asked Eclipse that they please send me the decals that would be necessary to match up after the repairs were made.

3 months later they sent the wrong "bigger" decal, and when I told them that they said it "was the best they could do, and o by the way, the second smaller decal was "unavailable".

Mind you, this coach was less than 16 months off the lot, and had been towed less than 500 miles.

Last spring I walked into the coach and found the convertible sofa on the wall laying on the floor. The only weight ever on that couch was our 40 lb. dog. The sofa is attached to the side wall via screws into the aluminum studs using #10 sheet metal screws. I would up putting 1/4-20 nut-serts into the studs and using grade 8 bolts to fix the problem.

There is my Eclipse Story. I have all the pictures, all of the emails, and will save them forever.

I've been tempted mightily to buy two large decals of a Lemon, and put them on the ramp door and the nose cap...but the wife says no.
