Rock guard?

How many people use some sort of rock guard on the truck when pulling 5th wheel? I'm thinking of the ones that go across the back of the truck, usually in the bumper receiver.

We just got our first fifth wheel and I wasn't thinking of doing it because we rarely go on gravel except at slow speeds in the campground. Then, on the maiden voyage we stopped for fuel in a couple of gas stations with wet gravel which led to front of camper being pelted with mud/gravel from tires when we pulled out and hit the road again.

Do they work?

Thanks. And you are right, not very often does it see really bad roads. But with a painted trailer, I wanted to keep as much road debris from the trailer as possible.

I made one that goes in my receiver, it is 8' wide, using 4 24" rubber mud flaps, 2"x2" angle iron and 2" square tubing, I have less than $30 in it and works as good or better than ones you can buy.

Wow! $300 for mud flaps. Who'd a thunk. And ugly to boot. 🙂

Not a 5er, but I used a Rock Guard for my TT for years. It DID help a lot. Mine had 2 sets of 2-3 inch flaps that over lapped each other, from the end to the middle. It attached over the hitch that slid in the receiver. I also had mudflaps on my truck. Between the 2, I feel pretty certain it's saved my campers from getting beat up.

Now, I have an Equal-i-zer WD hitch system. It doesn't fit right on hitch any more, so haven't used it in a couple years now. But, I very seldom, if ever, go down gravel roads.

They do help, I really believe that!

I have Road Wings on my truck and a full flap on the rear of the trailer as I double tow a boat. I would not be without them since the first time I towed on a paved road that had been chipped sealed. It caused many chips in the two trailers.

They do work, and are a smart thing to have. We tried several and found Rock Tamers to work the best for us. http://www.ramgunner.com/rocktamers.html

I've been using Rock tammers on my truck for two seasons and previously I used truck mudflaps mounted for brackets I had made for my old truck. I know it works as the flaps get mud and other stuff thrown on them and the front of the RV stays clean and rock free.

Can't speak to the flap-style guards, but my FW has aluminum diamond plate across the front. Since we boondock, you can hear rocks hitting it when going down dirt roads.
