Towing Work and Play 18EC

Strongly considering getting one of these, a new 2016 model. I have a 3/4 ton Ram 2500 diesel that's been towing my 32' 5th wheel around for the past few years. Considering the down sizing for a multitude of reasons.

Is a weight distribution/sway hitch still going to be needed on a smaller toy hauler like that?

Downsizing to a smaller toy hauler sounds like a good move! Even with a lighter trailer, a weight distribution and sway hitch can still be beneficial. They help with stability and control, especially if you’re towing in windy conditions or on uneven roads. It’s worth considering, as it can make towing safer and more comfortable, even with a 3/4 ton truck. Just check the specific weight and towing specs for your new toy hauler to be sure!

Frankandbeans ... did you end up getting the 18ec?  If so, and if you are within 150 miles of Dayton OH, we'd like to come see it.  WE are interested in buying one of these but can't find one closer than 600 miles...always better to walk in and see on than look at photos and floor plan!

Not sure if you are aware but you are responding to a post that's 8 years old and the OP hasn't been on here since.

Your hitch most likely is not even close to hauling that without WD. I tow landscape trailers that heavy on the tongue with no problems but I upgraded to the Curt Class V hitch from etrailer. Now I don't worry at all.

Air bags with a true Class V hitch should be OK. But that's the least I would do.

The airbags won't help with sway. That 18c is still a 24' 2" trailer, I'd get the equalizer hitch to be safe about it. Depending on that you're loading and where the tanks are at it's a lot of unknowns. Assume you have a good trailer brake controller already. I've been in a horrible sway situation once before, I wouldn't tow without something to prevent sway. Distributing the weight isn't a bad idea either.

I forgot to mention I have air bags on the truck too. Bought them thinking I'd need them for the 5th wheel, but the truck doesn't really squat enough with the 5th wheel to need to pump them up. I've never inflated the bags more than 5 PSI, even with the 5th wheel fully loaded. Would they help with sway control at all?

You probably don't need the weight distribution, but the sway control portion would be helpful I would think.

Maybe, maybe not.
My 21' with an Equalizer 4-way on a 1/2-ton was solid. I gave the hitch setup to my FIL for his rig when I got my larger truck. I'm thinking about getting another one, but it isn't a high priority on my list. I do feel some push from larger vehicles passing by sometimes, and that is with running max pressure in the truck (80) and trailer (50).
