If your not tied to a clock, how far do your travel in 1 day?

So your not over tired, nor over stretched and then the next day tired. Old Man rest usually gets his justice somewhere, then is's usually Expensive...

Advice for a new old guy..

Here in the west lots of easy in and out truck stops, for fuel. Have done 600 mile day. We prefer 3 to 400 mile days. Long trip first day on the road by 6AM. short trip on the road by 9 AM . Travel at 60-65Mp. No hurry no worry....

good plan.

Any variation of that is good.

Start to roll 3 hours after the high mileage people. Roll for 3 hours. Stop rolling 3 hours before the high mileage people.

Did 310 today, bout average for us. By the time you stop for potty breaks, noon meal break and setup in campground, makes a pretty long day. I run 65 mph, tow haul , exaust break on, cruis control on. Got 11.3 avg today, 2016 F350 superduty diesel dually, hauling 15600 fifth wheel.Good days travel, headed to NM for the summer.

I have two personal records and I don't plan to ever break them.

Towing: 850 miles from Los Angeles to Pocatello Idaho. (It turns out those 850 miles were easier than the next day's 500 miles to Glacier Park, MT.)

Not Towing: 1,050 miles from Dillon Montana to Los Angeles on a frozen snowy day.

I'd rather take it slow and enjoy the road. I'll never put in those kind of miles unless I'm on the lam.

Depends on where we are going. Yesterday it was only 150 miles to get to our next destination Tomorrow about 350. Last week it was 600 from home to Calgary. No set distance, our destination determines how far we drive. After the long weekend we are going from Fort St John to Whitehorse and we have two weeks to do it so not far each day.

Like many, we plan for 300-350, sometimes we do a bit more, sometimes less. We like checking out by 8, and getting into a campground early afternoon. Many times the deciding factor on all this is the time of day and what we're passing through. Cities may cause us to leave early or late to avoid traffic, a city can cause us to go over or under the 300-350 mark too. I like to try and find a campground on the far side of a city so I don;t have to deal with it when I checkout.

A normal exception is Ill drive 500 miles on the first day of a trip to get through the north east.

Normally 500 was the max but this Christmas we went from Ann Arbor to Savannah Georgia in about 19 hours and around 900 miles. I know that seems crazy but with the diesel, it was so much less stress than the gasser I had before. Of course we were just stopping for the night for a little shut eye then back on the road at Oh dark 30.

Sometimes you have to make tracks. Example: We leave Albuquerque on the last day of the Hot Air Balloon Festival after dropping a guest off at the airport on Sunday. Next event to make is the following Saturday on the Eastern Shore of the Chesapeake Bay. We need to arrive mid day Friday so that we can pick up a guest from the Baltimore airport in the evening.

6 days of hustling along for us but nothing compared to what some do.

300 is still easy. 400 is getting long. About 500 is max.
Big difference too for flat interstate vs twisting mountain roads.
I do like to arrive early enough to be parked and set up before dinner.
Just means we leave way early if the day will be long.

A man (or woman) of my own heart!

The only thing I add--and this is just my preference--I make the decisions about those days in the comfort of my home office. My planning for the trip involves determining (as much as I can) the kind of roads for that day and the possible campsites for overnight.

Even though we are long retired we are NOT full-timers. That would make a lot of difference. We make trips, we are not just moving along, and we do have a more limited time frame in mind.

We have a trip planned for July/August to Banff, Canada from here in East Texas. I am working on planning each days drive. The longest I have so far is 370 miles, but there is a lot of Texas I have to put behind me on the first days drive. Several days are around 200, many in the 300 range.

I just give these as examples of the way my daily distance or hours are determined.

I'm surprised that some of these numbers are so high for those who are retired. I'm seeing a lot who say 300 miles per day. When I retire my max will be about 300 per week. I may drive 50 or 100 miles, stay somewhere a day or two, and then move on. 300 miles in a day sounds like a job to me.
