Traveling thru Alabama to Florida

I am planning to travel south for a couple of months this winter. I was thinking about taking Route 231 from Montgomery Al to US10 in the panhandle. Has anyone made this trip? Did you have any concerns or low bridges on Route 231? My RV is 13' 2" to top of AC and would rather not leave it in the road because of a low bridge.

A new Love's truck stop has opened in Ozark, Al. Diesel prices are in the $2.29 range around Dothan at this time.

This is a very pleasant drive. I have done it several times towing our 13' 3" fiver and also in a big rig 13' 6" before I retired. Have fun. Another vote for Deer Run CG.

Thanks everyone for your helpful replies. I was not looking forward to pulling thru Atlanta and figured there has to be a better route that wouldn't add too many miles.

We have used Rt. 231 for the last several years going back and forth. Deer Run is an excellent CG with very friendly management.

We took 331 on our way to topsail, entering at Montgomery. Great route, would do again. LESS STRESSFUL than the interstate...easier on the truck!

X3, I also like 331 south when going to Topsail but when heading to Fort Wilderness we use 231, both cross I-10. have a safe trip.

x2 for Deer Run. They have spa!!! Route 231 is a divided double lane highway going through small towns. Good highway no low bridges. Check your gas before leaving Montgomery so you don't have to worry about easy access gas stations.

It might be a very long day getting there from Detroit in one day.

We have a few years before we can escape Michigan winters and planned on using 231 for our trip to Port St Joe in May. If you're looking for an overnight spot I have read some good reviews on Deer Run RV Park north of Troy, AL. http://www.deerrunrvpark.com/

I hope to make it that far the first day from the west side of Detroit, leaving a short day of travel on our second day.

Don't give it a second thought. In my opinion this is the absolute best route south if it doesn't take you too far out of your way. Adds maybe an hour for me but great roads, bypasses mountains and traffic. I've used it the past two years but this year we are going to have a couple stops along the east coast so we're going to have to take the less desirable route on the way down at least.
...oh, and no low bridges to worry about.
