What's a good deal? Big Country 3155

For some of you experienced RV buyers, what's a good deal? Currently looking hard at a Big Country 3155. MSRP is listed at $87,000 and the sale price is $62,000. Is the standard dealer discount off that high price? Is there any wiggle room from the $62K or should I be jumping on that deal?

I've been in the game since 1985. The rule of thumb is 25% off list. That looks like a good price.

A Landmark is an upscale Big Horn which is an upscale Big Country.
A Cedar Creek Champagne is and upscale CC Hathaway which is an upscale CC Silverback
A GMC is an upscale Chevy
A Cadillac is an upscale Buick which is an upscale Chevy

Quite frankly, we think/feel our BC is nicer than a BH. But that's our opinion. With the exception of the LM's, both the BH & BC are very similar with the BH's having more floorplans.

A year ago and a few months, we bought a Bighorn 3970RD. List was $93,00 and change. Bought at $66,000. If you're willing to spend, look at Bighorn units versus Big Country.

28% off retail is a good starting number. What does it have on it for tires? That would be a smart negotiating point to get some good quality GY tires on it.

drwwicks is spot on. If your going to trade, do as he said. But based on what you wrote as figures, I don't think that's a good deal, and I'll tell you why.

Last year at this time, we too were in the midst of ordering a new Big Country 3560 SS. Local dealer at that time was going to give us squat for our '06 coach, but his OTD price on a '18 BC was only 25% off MSRP. At 1st this sounded good, until I did some research. Same coach, same specs, we found a dealer 500 miles away for north of 12k less. asked local dealer if that's his best price, came back w/ another price which was still 9k more than the out of state dealer!!!! Was able to sell our '06 coach for more than what local dealer was going to offer on trade. In fact, local dealer had the same coach BC on his lot w/ less add on's than what we wanted for more money than one we got!!!! When I questioned him on the % off as I just got a flyer from his dealer and it showed something like 30% off, his reply was "Yea if you want something that's been here for awhile".

So we had to travel 2 days, spend 1 night and spent around 4-500 bucks to get the BC, BUT still came out ahead.

FWIW, go to Couches RV Nation website, type in TV info and it will spit out a price for you. Any add'l features not listed, ask/call them up as that's what we did. Took a few calls, but got what we wanted. Oh, ours spec'd out at just over 91K and OTD was 57K. Was willing to give local dealer the biz if he came down even 1/2 the diff in price between him and Couches. All I got was, "Thanks for calling".

MSRP and Trade-in are easily manipulated figures. Difference is what you are trying to figure out. MSRP can be pumped up by adding dealer installed options such as "all season treatment" (wax job), and other nebulous things. On a unit many things can change the real value, 50 amp upgrade, 2nd A/C, slide toppers, etc. Dealers very likely will add, transportation, dealer prep, PDI, document fee, coffee fee, employ movie pass fee, almost the weekend fee, etc.

Personally my method of dealing, vehicle or RV, is determine the best price out the door. Make sure you clearly reference the OTD with NOTHING added. The dealer finance manager will also hit you up for extended service plans, tire plans, maintenance plans, internal financing, and any other financial add on to boost his commission. Skip all these on a new unit, ALL. Walk if he/she won't shut up.

After you have the OTD price, then discuss trade-in. You will receive a ridiculous low offer because they give less than loan value on trade value. If you want more trade value, then they adjust the asking price, or add fees. Difference is the key factor.

Investigate and arrange your own financing. Your local bank or CU might be the best rates, but not always. Let them run some numbers and see if they can beat your numbers. Surprisingly a few years ago the Dodge dealer was able to get a 5 year no prepayment penalty for less that 1%. I took that since my investments returned more than that. No since cashing in a 3% return in exchange for 1% interest.

We considered at the Big Country 3155. Nice trailer for the price for sure. For our needs it had the best value in the price point.

When I was shopping around we were looking at a 2017 leftover in 2018. MSRP was listed at 84K and best deal I could find online was 57K. That's close to 32% off MSRP.

We are looking at a price point slightly higher and for Heartland that would be a Bighorn.

Did a quick internet search and noticed a 2018 3155 at 59K.

I'm thinking the price you listed is not to bad but you might be able to do better depending on if you are willing to travel to get one. And depending upon if having a relationship with a local dealership is important or not.

Just did a couple quick checks at dealerships I had on my list for the Big Country. http://www.lamesarv.com/2018-Heartland-BIG%20COUNTRY-LN110350LeMasa RV has it at 57K but with an MSRP of 83K.


Not sure I would trust the MSRP to be real or not. You have to consider the options on the trailer obviously. Some say anything over 25% off MSRP is good. Some day shoot for 40% and get 35%. Depends on a lot of factors I'm sure.

Doesn't look like a tremendous deal. Quick google search shows several new units for sale in the mid $50k range. Some local dealers can beat RVTrader prices, mine did on my Jayco, by about $3k.
