Advice on leaving California

My plan is to buy a 5th wheel out of state and at that time move out of California. Probably domicile in Florida. Does anyone have any advice on how best to do this? Especially timing-wise?

I know I'll need to get a driver's licens and register my vehicles. But is it as simple as that? Has anyone on the forum left California this way? Any advice. Thank you!

Oh, and Happy Easter!

Boy. Just can't say anything nice. The Oregon attitude. Gotta love it.

Given that many many tens of thousands of Californians have bailed out of California and moved to Oregon, that comment may be more attributed to an "ex-Californian" attitude than an Oregon attitude. I am one of these. Those who become sick and tired of the Liberal politics, the crime, the dirty air, the heat, the crowds, the crappy roads, the taxes, etc. etc. etc. and who have the where-with-all to retire out of state do tend to come to Oregon.

That said, what I believe that poster was trying to point out is that it would be best to establish residency in the desired state before moving out of California and purchasing the new RV. I would add that my mail forwarding service, Saint Brendan's Isle, may well provide excellent assistance to the original poster if he is desiring to establish a Florida Residence before becoming a full timer. They have a great reputation in assisting in this matter.

I'm not too worried about the loan. Either we will still have the hose as collateral (and it's paid off, own it free and clear), or we will have sold the house and will have the money in the bank. I'd still like to finance the RV either way because dealers tend to be more aggressive on pricing if you finance. At least that's what I've heard.

Why not keep our house and rent it out since it's paid for? Uh... no. Not in this town. 🙂

Thanks for all the replies!

Our plan is to sell our house and go full time in the RV. I figure there's no way around California getting it's cut of that. What I'm trying to avoid is paying CA state sales tax on the RV I buy. I'll probably buy from Kansas RV but will be a resident of Florida. I'm trying to time things such that I leave California (whether the house is sold or not) and set up domicile in Florida. I won't have place to live until I pick up the 5th wheel from Kansas RV.

So is it better to set up domicile in FL first? Can I do it on my way to pick up my RV in Kansas?

A nearby campground is owned by a californian. He comes here for a few weeks every year for proof of residency and to register his vehicles. His house in Ca. is his 'Vacation Home'.
Hows that for the way to play the game?

Following that process helps with the loan side of the equation. But leaves you owing Ca their sales tax on the purchase. Depends whether getting a loan or avoiding the sales tax is your priority.

Getting the new state to accept you as a new resident is easy, its convincing the Ca FTB that you actually moved out of Ca and severed all ties to Ca, before buying the new vehicle that's important. As the law says, your domicile doesn't change until you have established the new one, and moving out of Ca is part of establishing a new domicile state.
When I retired and began fulltiming as a SD resident, I was on my way out of Ca the hour after collecting my final checks and gold watch. I had already sold my Ca house and extra car. I bought my motorhome years before leaving the state, so I didn't have that complication. I had switched all my accounts to my new SD address before the final day. I filled out the Ca DMV forms to notify them that my current Ca vehicles, motorhome & toad, were being transferred to SD. At the end of that year, I filed a final Part Year Ca Resident tax form using my new SD address.

If you are getting a loan most get the loan while they still have their house. THEN move, establish your domicle etc.

All you do when you are settled is make a 'mailing address' change to your loan company. They don't care where you have the payment mailed to as you get your payment in the mail and pay it.

We must be willing to get rid of the life we've planned,
so as to have the life that is waiting for us.

Guess I got lost on this one. Are you suggesting you can't ever move if you have a vehicle loan? Of coarse if you are applying for a loan they want vehicle registered in some state. Most likely before you pick it up.

Don't forget to get an legal address in which ever state you choose - mail forwarding services are the easiest way to go and will help you get established. What about health insurance, have you got that covered? Also you will need full timer insurance on vehicle(s), will be more expensive than regular if you don't have a house that would include personal liability insurance.
