2006 LTV sprinter needs alternator

My battery indicator light came on and the code reader indicated it's the alternator. A vin search does not indicate what type of alternator was installed originally. They didn't have time to pull it today to see what amperage it needs. Does anyone know? Otherwise it will be a delay in ordering.

Before spending over $750. for a new alternator, OR EVEN REBUILDING IT,have you tried a new voltage regulator package (for less than $50.)
Any Merc. mechanics (outside the normal steeler) will tell you replacing the voltage regulator will fix 99% of alternator problems.

If it's the regulator, try this link - http://www.autozone.com/autozone/repairguides/Sprinter-2005-2007/Charging-System/Voltage-Regulator/_/P-0996b43f8075b7b5

Doesn't appear to be very difficult.

When the alternator in my 2006 Great West Sprinter went out, I replaced it with a 200 amp Bosch. Found it new on Amazon for under $200.
My local dodge dealer installed it for me and said it was the right one considering the load on the battery.

I wish I had the time for a rebuild but I am ready to leave on vacation. At least this happened at home and not in the middle of nowhere.

arvie,

We have a 2005 LTV Sprinter and had the alternator rebuilt at the suggestion of the repair shop. It was a big cost savings over a new one.

Lucky he's got a T1N to upgrade the alternator. The NCV3 PCM doesn't allow the alternator to be upgraded over stock without a reflash at dealer

You may want to consider an upgrade in terms of amps if you have the need. This forum and www.sprinter-source .com have several write ups about the pros and cons. I have a 2006 LTV. I do not know what amperage is in it. I think the incremental cost of more amps is worth it.

I'd check the battery first. It can lead one to believe the alt is bad when the battery is just shorted internally.

your sprinter is a TN1. it's not the current sprinter. i would go to the sprinter forum. I'm sure someone there can help you.
