30 amp 110 or 220 volt?

Our mh is a 50 amp system. With an adapter, I can use 30 amp with limited capabilities. I am putting a 30 amp receptacle at my home so that I can run our fridge and one ac (total 11 amps). My question is should this receptacle be wired up 110 volts or 220 volts? I am fairly sure it should be 220 but just not 100% sure. Any comments?

Because I am not that comfortable with electric, I had a licensed electrician hook up my 30 amp receptacle at my home. Only problem is he hooked up 220. I brought my motor home over the next day, plugged it in and promptly burned out, 2 TV's, 2 roof a/c units and the micro wave. The company covered the damages which totaled over $5000.

Just moving the White wire is not good enough. You cannot use the Double Pole, 220V breaker. You must buy a Single Pole, 120V 30amp breaker. $7.00 or so.

As for the "left side, right side". Make sure it is color to color. Meaning Black to Brass, White to Silver, and Bare to Green or Ground bar if the RV box has that. If you don't get the wires on the correct connector your polarity will be wrong and will do damage.

This is a do it yourself job, but since you are new to it and unsure, the best you can do is get that electrician out as you said. Small price to pay to ensure it is correct.

There is nothing against code for using "half" of a double pole breaker for a 120V circuit (to the best of my knowledge), nor are there any safety concerns—the double pole breaker is essentially just two single pole breakers hooked together so that when one trips, the other is forced to trip. It will properly protect the wiring when only one leg is in use.

If replaced with a single pole breaker, the extra space in the breaker box would need a filler of some sort—either a blank fill plate, or a spare single pole breaker, or something along those lines. Assuming this is done, there is nothing wrong with replacing it with a single pole breaker, either, and it might be less confusing later on.

A 30 amp receptacle MUST be 120V and it MUST be powered from only one breaker. You will have a 3 wire (hot, neutral, ground, usually black, white, green) 120V connection. Be sure you are not trying to wire it like you would find a home electric dryer which is 220 but has a similar looking 3 plug setup. You do not want one of these plugs. 30amp dryer plug
What I post is my 2 cents and nothing more. Please don't read anything into my post that's not there. If you disagree, that's OK.
Can't we all just get along?

This is a close up of the 30A to 50A ADAPTER showing how the HOT 1 ans HOT2 legs are wired together. Using this adapter feeds both zones of your 50AMP trailer but you will be restricted to only 30AMPs of service.... You will have to watch what you have turned on at the same time otherwise it will trip your breaker.

The beauty of having the contractors to do this is they are bonded and when they blow up your appliances for wiring it they way they think it is suppose to be they will replace your burned up items. You doing all of the wirng it will be ALL ON YOU...

Confirm this wiring (30 amp picture) with a voltmeter and you are good to go. OR, print it and have your electrician confirm it.

Thanks a bunch guys. I did move the white wire from the ther 120 volt line to the neutral bar. So now I have the black hot wire to the left side of the receptacle, the white wire from the neutral bar to the right side of the receptacle and the ground to the ground bar. I have still not powered it up. I'll get an electricans approval first. Parking the mh at my home is only for a few days at at time. It is housed at my shop where I have a 50 amp service, water and dump station. Thanks again for all the comments!

50A is 120V also.

For few dollars more put in the 50A vs 30A at home

X2 You won't regret it. While you are at it, put in an RV dumpsite. Best thing I ever added to the house.

DO NOT TURN IT ON while connected to 220. You will regret it. Don't try to understand electricity, just respect it and follow the rules. It is confusing and deadly. This is what you need... It sounds like you have the correct plug as you stated you purchased the RV box from Lowe's. What you need now is to purchase a "Single Pole, 120V, 30 amp breaker" (I had to get my GE brand at HD as Lowe's did not carry it. They do carry Square D and Westinghouse)and some #10 2-wire with ground Romex. (It will have orange sheathing).

This is how you connect it. In the Service Box (Breaker Box) connect the BLACK wire to the breaker you just purchased, connect the WHITE wire to the NEUTRAL BAR, connect the BARE wire to the GROUND Bar. Now at the RV box connect the BLACK to the Brass connector, the WHITE to the Silver connector, and the Bare wire to the Green connector.

That's it. you now have a 120V 30amp RV hook up as you wanted.

RVs are run on 120V 30amp, not 220V 30amp like your Home Dryer or Range.

Aiken, using the 50/30 dogbone still only gives you 30 amp service. The dogbone only pulls off ONE side of the 50 amp service. Your coach's electric limits you to only 30amps.

And yes, a 50amp service feed is actually TWO 50amp, 120VAC circuits EACH providing 50amps independently. That's why 50amp coaches work better.

Watts = Amps X Voltage...Watts = 30amp X 120 volts or 3600 Watts. Watts = 50amp X 120 volts or 6000 watts X TWO = a whopping 12,000 usable watts!

Most of the advice you've gotten is good but you still have to choose which to follow. I'll just say this, the 30 amps you want for your MH is just like a 15 or 20 amp outlet and wired the same. But:
BUT with so much at stake, please have a qualified electrician do the final hookup and take responsibility for the installation. You don't want to screw up this task.

If you can use adapters to bring it down to a regular 110 volt house hold plug, why do you think it would be 220?
