My friend is thinking about one for a toad and I have found no info on them. 2 wd, auto. If so what did you need?

My friend has a late model 4wd 4runner and installed drive shaft disconnects front\rear, I think he spent about $3,500 (without brakes and towbar) to make his 4runner flat towable.

It would have been better off trading the 4Runner in on a Jeep. I guess he must have loved that 4Runner.

I almost bought a 4x4 Toyota Truck to use as a toad but the owners manual clearly says don't tow four-down. The car salesman assured me that you could do it and the owners manual was just a precaution thing and it wouldn't cause any problems. So I told him I'd buy the truck if the dealership were to put in writing that in the event any mechanical issues came up and I had problem getting warranty coverage because of the four-down towing, that the dealership would cover all repairs during the warranty period. The dealership would not give me that contract. So what that tells me as they know good and well that as soon as I put the baseplates on that truck that the warrant for the transfer case and transmission is probably void.

I agree w/Katiebug it's too much trouble to tow w/drive shaft disconnects. Use a Toad that can go 4 down w/a simple shift pattern.

It would be nice to be able to just tow 4 down but sometimes if you want to tow a preferred vehicle like my Tacoma you have no option. I need mine to haul my 4 wheeler and I wanted an automatic so I had no real choice. My disconnect works great, twice a year I get under the truck and spray with lots of WD40 and that is it. Never put any lube of any kind on it because all it does is attract dirt and is not recommended by the manufacture. They do need to be set up properly on installation but after that it is good to go. I put mine on in 2005 and have had no regrets, mine cost me $1200.00 to have it installed in 05, have no idea what the cost would be today.

Thanks Folks, That is pretty much what I told him too but wanted to be sure I was correct.

The Tacoma requires a driveshaft disconnect. Some here say they have no trouble with them and some say they are a pain. I used one for three years on my Tacoma. I tried really hard to like it, even posted here about them being ok. After three years I wanted it out of my life. For me it was a pain. It required constant cleaning and lube. I now have the Jeep, throw the transfer case in neutral, transmission in park and go. Worry free. I would never, repeat never buy a vehicle that is not towable without mods. Too many vehicles out there towable as is from the factory.
