Being pulled over by LEO

Never have been, and don't plan to be. Very curious as to the actual procedure if it happened. Now I'm sure the officer would come to the side door ( by passenger up front on our DP).

So should I get up and open the door and step out to meet them, or allow the wife to unlock the door. If you allow them to step inside or you open the door to them have you given up your right to being searched as we invited them in? Or let's say they climb the step and sorta put a arm inside on the dash. Just wondering what the legal ramifications would be. Personally our dogs wouldn't take kindly to their entrance.

If anyone has had this happen what has it gone like? I as many others believe in protecting our rights. Just curious if making them stand outside raises flags on their end. I certainly wouldn't invite them to sit in my car if that were the case.

Just pass the info needed out the screen door opening?
Might be a silly post. Just has me wondering what most people would do

See very few Motor Homes pulled over. When we do it is broke down.
Motor coaches for entertainers etc on the other hand we've seen several,
Not the top rated folks but groups or entertainers I'm not familiar with.
Then there is Willie Nelson.
Pretty hard to spin out or drag race or weave in and out of traffic in a motor home towing a car.
Some may seed but don't see many more than ten over.
If we get stopped it won't be a big deal. Doubt it would be fora ticket.
Hope it is not tires smoking on the toad. I have one reverse light that has to be replaced often but I don't back down the road.
Just sit in your seat and see if he comes to drivers window or the entry door(more likely)

Dang, I just realised I own an airsoft pistol. Can you even GET those that don't look like real guns, plus the orange tip?

That Tamir Rice video looked to me like it was in the middle of the afternoon, and he was a little kid. Did not look anywhere near 20. There were no humans around for him to point the gun at. Maybe someone is thinking of another shooting video?

You have the facts all wrong. If there were no humans, who called the police and told them there was a guy in the park pointing a gun at people? That was why the police went to the park. Right after the shooting (within seconds) one of the officers got on the radio to report the shooting and stated the person shot was a "20 year old male." So what the officers saw was what they thought was a 20 year old male with a real gun who was pointing it at people. It is very tragic that a 12 year old boy died, but it isn't like they were judge, jury, and executioner as you claim. Did they make a mistake? I don't know, I wasn't there. It appears to me that their tactics were bad as they shouldn't have simply driven up next to him like that, but there may be a reason for that too. Maybe they didn't see him until they were next to him. I don't know.

I didn't start it, but just couldn't let the bad info go unchecked.

I don't think this is right. Protocol is to sit with your hands on the wheel and don't grab anything until told to do so. Be visible and don't start rummaging for anything. The officer has no idea what you are digging for and can assume the worst. If he asks you for your info, then you get it.

Best advise is to stay IN your rig, and keep your empty hands insight. IF, you are reaching for anything out of the officer's line of sight, say so beforehand. Don't make quick moves as that spooks law enforcement as well. Do exactly as the officer instructs you to do, and do not run under any circumstances. Everything is up to the officer - not going outside your rig - unless you are instructed to do so. Don't pull over in an unsafe place, and turn your rig off.

I have this privilege, too. I think it's because I am white and more or less middle class. Being female, helps, too.

All the stuff in the news this past year sure has clued me in that it IS a privilege, though, and one that many polite, law-abiding, mild-mannered Americans do not have.

No. It is because you are a law abiding citizen. Has nothing to do with being white, female or any other color. IF you treat the LEO with respect, Do what he / she says. They will have no reason to treat you any other way.
The stuff you have seen on the news happened because the person was rude, disrespectful, and fought the officers. Bottom line. LEO is NOT going Blue light you, walk up to the vehicle and shoot you for no reason.
Never take the news today for truth. They have their agenda, and they twist the news to reflect their opinion to get you to believe the way they do. Want proof. Ask Brian Williams how many times he was really shot down. and if he says any more than none. It's a lie.

Did you see that video of the kid (I think he was 12 years old) who was playing by himself in the park with a toy gun? Officers pulled up and shot him instantly. No time for him to give them any lip even if he wanted to (and he looked like a shy and geeky kid). It was all on the security camera.

There us much more to the story than what you told here, but I don't think this is the place for this.

With respect et2, It really is the same thing. It is an attitude that people are getting from TV and slanted reporting. LEOs almost without exception are there to help and want to help. After years of abuse by people they may get jaded and become less friendly or more standoffish, but they still are there to help and to save lives. We see ourselves as protecting society and we are truly trying. Society is just making it harder and it is reflected in people getting an attitude when they get pulled over. Same thing. I also sit with my back to the wall, facing the door. As a OTR driver. You learn those things the hard way. Does it mean you are scared. No. It just means you are careful, and have seen more than you ever wanted.

And just to interject another thing. People today are not like we were years ago. Even kids 12 years old are killing people, their own parents no less. People no longer have respect for human life. They no longer believe there are consequences to being lawless. Parents, and a lax Government have bailed them out, and let them go, and they think they are above it all. And when they do get what they ask for. Society blames the one they attacked, Instead of themselves for making them that way.

I never realized there were so many LEOs hanging out around here.

There's a similar thread running on another website. Many in that thread seem to think that LEO's don't RV. I would venture to guess that LEO's and fire fighters make up one of the largest groups of RVers after retired folks.

You would be surprised how often law enforcement goes out of their way to help RVers because so many of them are RVers and know the frustration of breaking down.

So......it's very rare that an RV gets stopped and if it happens to you, cut them some slack. They're no different than you.

I worked the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department for 34 years, which included the jails, patrol, Internal Affairs and the last 15 years in Arson/Explosives, with an arson dog. When I first started, I was told by someone I admired, that you should..... treat people the same way you want your own family to be treated. I followed this code and it served me well.

Personally, I think that many in this country, including me, are fed up with just about every level of government. Without realizing it, many are lashing out at the only level of government they have contact with...law enforcement....consequently, cop bashing is in vogue.

Not disputing this comment. But it has nothing to do with the reason for the post. And is usually the reason these post get closed is people tend to get carried away and take it too far.

I'm sorry but I have to say that your comment is at best naive and at worst irresponsibly stupid. No LEO is either judge jury or executioner. They may have to make a split second decision to use deadly force in a situation that they honestly perceive as a deadly threat to themselves or others. They are human and sometimes make mistakes. I once saw a LEO shoot another by mistake. The one shot was in plain clothes and had a gun in his hand. Accident, tragic but still an accident. I could show you pictures of real guns painted to look like a toy. And more pics of toys that look exactly like they were real. I played with guns as a child also but two things, one, toys looked like toys, guns looked like guns. Two, it was a much different world where cops were respected and looked up to. Now because of lies and sensationalized TV and some awful mistakes and slanted reporting, police are vilified by the public. We are always on out toes now. You have to watch every car that pulls up alongside you. You have to scope out the local diner before you go in and watch every customer that enters for fear of an ambush. You go out of your house in the morning looking for strange cars in the neighborhood. You watch to see if anyone follows you home. someone videos every move you make and every word you say and the only part you see on TV is the one mistake you made or the one thing that looked bad without any of the information that led you to that point that vindicates you. Now tell me why a cop shoots when they see a realistic gun pointed at them. Rant over, sorry folks but I couldn't let it pass. I've seen friends gunned down trying to help other people.
