Beware of Flying J

We are 1/3 of the way through a 7500 mile X country trip. I have used FJ exclusively and have had no problems until yesterday. At exit 95 on I 65 south of Indianapolis, IN, the diesel sign indicated $3.89 9/10 (cash) and with my Good Sam Reward card I thought I would be paying $3.83 9/10 to fill my DSDP, HA!!! I failed to look at the price at the pump at the RV island, and when I was finished, saw that I was being charged $4.14 9/10 per gal. This is over 30 cents per gal., or in my purchase, $22.00 more. When I complained, I was told that if I checked the price listed on the interstate sign, I would see that it said "tax exempt trucks only". They were right, and you could see it if you had strong binoculars.

I have always paid the price which was shown on the hi way sign so this is a new gimmick. I don't know if this is exclusively in IN or if this is going to be nationwide. Has anyone else experienced this?

Also figure fresh fuel for dp, I like to stick with a company that will pay up if they blow my engine.
And I have seen oil refineries actually do that!! But you have to have all your ducks in a row to make the claim against them. The receipt from the station. The bill diagnosing the problem. A sample from the station you brought the fuel, take right after you noted the problem, and a sample from your fuel tank. If the samples confirm the mechanics diagnostics, the company will take care of you.

But "fresh fuel", as a retired petroleum hauler, don't make me laugh!

Yep - sometimes they are sneaky, but it is not just Flying J

Also figure fresh fuel for dp, I like to stick with a company that will pay up if they blow my engine. We just did 7700 miles using almost all J's and none very few were higher than the competition. I always check fuel prices while on the road and skip any that were higher. They are usually 240 miles apart so works for us.

We only purchase FJ/Pilot if there is nothing, and I mean nothing else around. I don't like being price gouged because they might be a little easier to get into. We just drove I-95 from Florida to NY. My last fuel stop was Elkton, Md. FJ/Pilot - 3.899
Valero - 3.619 So where do you think I stopped? 18 cents per gallon is a decent savings.

With all the variations in fuel prices from one location to another, I would never make a flat statement like that. When we traveled from Florida to NY at the end of March, we refueled at an FJ in South Carolina because they were the cheapest in the area by about 10 cents, not including our discount. Who got the most recent delivery is often a factor in day to day pricing.
X2

And today the difference in Elkton is 6 cents/gal between FJ and Valero. Minus 3 cents for my FJ discount. It could cost more if I had to drive further to Valero.

So consider price, discounts, location and access for the MH.

The title of that thread will come up on searches now forever more. That is how folks bomb businesses. I would like to think that was not the OP`s desire, but who knows?

I find it funny as all get out, how so many will spend $10 in extra fuel cost running around looking to save $3......:s

Actually, the title of this thread should read differently. It is not about Flying J at all. It should read: Beware of the Indiana Fuel Tax at the Fuel Pumps!

The Gas Buddy map can help determine high/low areas as you travel.
