Broken window

The last time we were out with the motor home (Pismo Beach, Ca.) the motor home locked us out. I had the key but when I unlocked the door and pulled the handle it relocked itself. I ended up breaking a bedroom window to crawl through. I broke the window that needed replacing because it was fogged up. This is the second time this happened to us. The first time it was simple, called AAA and they sent a locksmith out, paid him a small fee and it was over and we were happy. This time it was 10:30 at night and Coach Net couldn't find a locksmith to come out. The even called the police to come help us and they wouldn't come. Has this ever happened to you and you ended up breaking a window ?

By the way, now I know why it does it and we will take precautions from now on. Couldn't even get my dog to unlock the door. Also going to leave that window unlocked from now on.:o

in a car or vehicle where you can get into the hood without entering it I taped a key to a bunch of wiring with black electricians tape. years later I sold the car to my boss. one day he left it running in the buildings garage all day 🙂 and had locked us out at the end of the day. after a short while I remembered what I had done, we popped the hood, unwrapped the tape and got into the car.

Metal Hide-A-Key is worthless.

1. They can fall off.

2. Moisture gets inside them and the key rusts.

I put my spare keys in a zip lock bag and Duct tape it to the frame in my engine compartment which isn't locked. Actually Gorilla Tape.

I also leave my drivers side window unlocked now due to a similar problem when thieves broke my entrance door window in a storage facility and wrecked the lock.

This kind of story makes me glad that I have both a passenger and a driver side door. If one fails, I can always get in or out the other one.

Ghost, I locked myself out one time but, I left one window closed but unlocked! I found a kind neighbor that had a ladder so I could get into the coach. Your downfall which is not your fault was time of day! Good Luck, getting a locksmith out of bed in the late evening.

When my latch lock broke a spring, (not the dead bolt, but the lower latching lock), I took it apart from the inside when it locked me inside. Removing 3 screws allowed for opening the door.

I found a spring that had broken off at the hook so I used a 1/4" zip tie to lash the spring on the post it was originally hooked on. That worked fine for 12 years. To be on the safe side, I also zip tied the latch handle (the exposed part that is used to lock the door) in the unlocked position while I continued on with my life using only the upper dead bolt.

Worked fine all those years.

If it were me, I think I would be finding out why it re-locked....

I repeat, I had at least two keys in my possession, just didn't work for the reason stated. Door would unlock and then relock itself. I have a door key on each set of tow car keys as well as on the motor home key ring.

4 whopping cylinders on Toyota RV's. Talk about great getting good MPG. Also I have a very light foot on the pedal. I followed some MPG advice on Livingpress.com and I now get 22 MPG! Not bad for a home on wheels.

The problem was I had a couple set of keys in my possession but they didn't work. Somehow, the inside latch handle snagged the outside of the glass slider on the screen door. Now that I know why I'll always make sure the slider is closed before I lock the door.

but the OP evidently had the key, and for some reason when it relocked itself the key wouldn't work????????????

Good to leave a window unlocked, in 11 years of fulltiming have had the entry lock break and the deadbolt above it break. On the entry lock lucked out our daughter was inside and that part of the lock worked. The second time, DW went through the driver's window which was unlocked and turned the thumb latch on the deadbolt. We used a picnic table to gain access to the driver's window. Also have a collapsible stepladder and a Tele-Steps extension ladder, buried in the basement of the Phaeton.
