Buying a Former Rental Class C. How many of us out there?

While researching these pages for my next Motor Home I saw a few threads discussing Rentals, most were Pros and Cons but very few posts from people who had purchased one.

I thought it may be a good resource and helpful to hear from these people. The good, the bad, what they liked and what they didnโ€™t. Also if they had any problems, things they changed, if they would recommend this to others or do it again.

Here is my story: I am not a novice, having owned a Class A for more than 15 years and doing the camping thing with my wife and two daughters, I can say โ€œbeen there done thatโ€ But life changes, and I sold everything so I have been away from this for several years. Starting over I lurked here for a while and got a lot of good insight then went looking.

My criteria was: A Class C within by budget, less than 30 feet so I can keep it at home, saving storage $, a rear bed, and a lot of storage space.

What fit that was Winnebago, Fleetwood and a few others, what I found mostly was Jamboree / Tioga 26Q. In the year models 2002 thru 2006. I did my home work looking at NADA and other sites to find the fair prices for the models that I was looking for.

After several months of searching the internet, Craigslist, private ads and Dealerships for a Class C that suited my budget and needs, this is what I found. Of the dozen or so I inquired about. Most were upsidedown in their payments, owing more than they were worth. All were on Ford Chassis, 7 needed tires, all had the original 7 to 10 year old tires, and they all needed repair of the awning and most needed some work inside or out and the maintenance records were sketchy, but most had low mileage. The Dealerships offerings were better but they had a profit margin to maintain so I got older models within my budget or huge up sales that didnโ€™t work for me.

My next step was looking at the rental market for sales. In my area there are 2 large companies that have rental sales, Cruise America and El Monte RV,who also sell Class A RVs.

First up was El Monte RV Their units are production RVs that are made by major manufactures, with TV antennas and hookups inside and out, Ducted A/C and heat, 2 house batteries, a rear ladder and parts are readily available from those manufactureโ€™s. I looked at their web site and it detailed their warranty and what was checked and serviced by their factory trained technicians. The unit I looked at was like new inside, the upholstery on all the seats was new as was the floor mat in the driverโ€™s area, it had a new mattress, still in plastic and a new bedspread. All of the curtains were new also. Newer (2010 mfg date) tires with 98% rubber and the mileage was ninety thousand (90,000).

Then there was Cruise America: Their units that I looked at seemed to be Spartan,no TV antenna or hookups for one,non-ducted A/C,small counter space and only one battery, no rear ladder for inspection and maintenance of roof and built just for them, they were all โ€œrefreshedโ€ their words not mine. They offered extended warranties at a huge cost. All had high mileage, one hundred and thirty thousand (130,000) or more and the price range seemed a little high. The sales staff had a take it or leave it attitude and were not very forthcoming when asked about maintenance records and service, they claim to have proprietary info in those records,It doesn't seem to be a problem for El Monte RV.

At El Monte RV I took a test ride; This Unit was a 2006 Tioga 26Q on a Chevrolet Chassis it rode
Drove and handled much better than the Fords that I had driven. It also had more leg room and was quieter. We got back and I asked about the service and maintenance on it, the salesman, Joey, handed me a 28 page single spaced document asked if I wanted some coffee or something to drink and said โ€œread this and if you have any questions I will answer themโ€.

It detailed everything that was done before and after each rental, the mileage, generator hours and hours billed. Each time it was washed and detailed inside and outside, all fluids were checked and replenished if needed, the holding tanks were washed, LP system was checked for leaks, all torque on wheel lugs were checked, brakes front and rear checked for wear and cracks, pressure in tires, all appliances, generator oil, lights inside and outside, the list goes on and on.

It also listed all oil changes, coolant change, trans service, fuel injector service and cleaning, fuel filters, air filter, new brakes, all repairs and replacements all with date, mileage and time spent in complete detail from day one to when it was pulled from the rental fleet and was refurbished. I have a complete service record on this vehicle. Also the service records on the Onan Generator, all oil changes, air filter and spark plug replacement with hours and date. I negotiated a good deal with them and am very happy with my purchase.

It came with a 1 yr. 12000 mile power train warranty and 30 day on all appliances. It also came with a 28 page maintenance record that detailed everything. Also the original sales packet from Fleetwood with the manual and serial numbers on all appliances, refrigerator, microwave, furnace, AC, water heater, etc. and the manual for the Chassis. I have had no problems with it so far.

(ON EDIT) 5 Years and close to 14000 miles.Just Scheduled Maintenance and new tires, old ones were at the 5 year mark and I wanted new Michelin LTX M/S2s.

There were a few things that it didnโ€™t have as it was a rental and the ones from private parties did have.
โ€ข Power steps, outside Stereo/CD donโ€™t need or want them.
โ€ข An Awning, this I wanted and had installed. A Swivel Seat and a new Window in The Door that I installed.
โ€ข Wheel Simulators, I like the looks so I had them installed and at the same time had Tire Man valve stem kit put on.
โ€ข Replaced the Chinese WFCO with a US Made converter/charger
โ€ข It came with mini blinds and not the day/night that most have, these are more practical and have a lot less failure.
  • It also came with Stainless Steel sinks, easier to maintain than the cheap plastic ones that come in the noncommercial units.

I am very happy with my Rig, it suites my needs and it was in my Budget range, I think I got a good deal.

So if you bought a rental please share your experience here for others to use as a resource.
Or if there are any other questions that have not been covered in these pages, just ask, there are many helpful people on this thread.

Thanks Ichabod. All fluids will be replaced since they couldn't produce actual maintenance records only a carfax and a list of what happens in the refurb facility.

For those of you with these CA vehicles I have a question. The LED bulbs inside are that AWFUL blue light. Has anyone replaced the LED bulbs inside and what type are they and what's a good place to source them?

I want ones with a warmer color.

It sounds like you have done your homework and know what you want and it will fit your needs,it is good to hear that they fixed any problems before delivery.

The alignment and shocks are a great Idea,I put a set of Bilsteins on mine and it made a huge difference. Another thing if you had not planed to do is to change the coolant and the brake fluid. It nice to start off with new fluids if you plan to tow.

Good Luck and have fun with your new toy and please come back and tell us how everything went.

First post since joining. This thread helped narrow my search. I'm taking delivery next weekend on a 2012 27g from Cruise America.

Drove well but before I even use for the first time I will be getting an alignment and new bilsteins along with an upgraded trailer hitch.

The interior of the CA homes are not my preference however the overall value is. I'm primarily going to use this as a tow vehicle for the race car so I can be more comfortable during race weekends.

The 2012 E450 with the GCVW of 22k is what appealed to me and when we were scoping it out we spotted a lot of minor things that needed to be addressed of which they took care of. So other than the fact that I will need to get the frame reinforced for a 10k hitch, replace the shocks, get tune up and do alignment - I didn't see a better "value" anywhere else. We did add a 14' manual awning during the time of purchase.

The thing about the 27G over the 28a that I like was the slightly smaller dimensions suited my needs better and the fiberglass front shell with it's added height made the inside front seem very tall.

Other add-ons that are on the very-short list are: rear-view camera, replace the interior LED lights with ones that are "blue light", 5-star Tuning tuner and maybe a steering stabilizer if the alignment doesn't improve things.

Perick Exactly our experience when we were looking as well. We love our CA 28A so far and look forward to many more happy miles. I could put 20K into repairs and still come out ahead of what I would have paid for some of the junk we saw for sale on local lots and at private listings in the papers and Internet.

Hi, w3ozwizard:

I have read all of your posts regarding your experience with the purchase of of CA 28A. All great posts and I have learned a lot. Infact, in about 2 weeks I'll be taking a drive out to Florida to buy a 28A myself. I have a few quick questions for you. What brand GPS do you use on your unit and what is the total CCC of the 28A? I know that CA puts a label somewhere on the passenger side door that states the CCC.

Also, what brand TPMS do use for the tires? Look forward to your input. Thanks.

Over two years with my 23A from CA here in SoCal. My only regret so far? Buying those two extended warranties. 3G's wasted. This thing is bullet proof mechanically and any small issues I have had (just like any owner) have been fixed by myself for pennies after asking questions here. RV.Net is a much better warranty. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Solar room on the roof? Tons on the 23A I have a 160W panel on the roof of mine and I also have a 100W portable I deploy when needed. Someone asked if 100W was enough. IMHO, without getting into solar too much, the answer is absolutely no and I don't even have a TV in my RV and I live in sunny SoCal. 200W is a minimum when using the furnace lightly at night. Now if the sun is perfect, and even here it rarely is, 160W does the trick by 5pm.

Wow!!! Thanks for the link IAMICHABOD!!!

Very interesting stuff. So I will do exactly as I did before with my GMC. When my Nitrogen filled tires start to get low I will simply empty 'em out completely and fill 'em up with some Good Ol' Air. After all it doesn't look like my RV will be taking flight or riding 150 miles plus per hour at the Indy 500 anytime soon!!!

Nitrogen vs Oxygen in the tires

Hello, All:

I've been getting more excited as the day is quickly approaching when I will buy the 28A Class C from Cruise America (3 more weeks).

So I was thinking about when I rented twice from Cruise America and I remembered that all of the tires had the "Green" caps on the valve stems which indicated, to me, that all tires were filled with Nitrogen. Which I understand helps keep a more consistent reading on the tire pressure as the tires will not loose pressure based on temperature changes outside. I was just curious if any of you on this thread have units with Nitrogen filled tires? What are your thoughts? Where would you take your RV's for Nitrogen refills? I remember when I purchased a GMC Envoy and it had Nitrogen filled tires too. Eventually the tire pressures did drop and I had nowhere to take it for a fillup of Nitrogen. It was kind of a bummer so I ended up deflating all of the tires and filling them with normal oxygen. I guess it was a bit of a pain to find places that would top off the tires with Nitrogen.

As always, it is great to hear from you guys!!!

We have a '15 28QB on the GM chassis. We also bought it used with about 17k miles. The layout works for us but, may not be ideal for everyone. The handling and ride is every bit as stable and comfortable as we would expect. Fuel mileage is around 9 towing a 3800# car and hovers around 10+- without it. Tank capacities are very respectable. We will be replcing the single 12v battery for two 6v units this week. The 12v has met our needs thus far but would like a little extra so we can take advantage of some off grid camping.
So far we have not had any issues with the unit itself. When we purchased it, the instrument cluster was flaky in that it would just shut down after a few miles and then come back on a few miles later. GM found a "loose wire" and repaired that under warranty.
I'm still playing around with air bag pressures. As we have it loaded, it seems to respond well to 20# in both bags. 30# seems to make the ride a tad bit more solid.
Feel free to ask any questions...

Gary

Hello IllinoisTraveler. Welcome to the forum.

I have no experience with the Coachman but other Large Rental companies do have the Coachman line in their inventory so it would seem that the hold up well in that market, with that mileage on it you should be just fine if it has had proper maintenance.

My Former Rental had 90000 miles on it after 5 years as a rental and it has held up very well.

One thing about it is a plus,it is on a Chevy Chassis it will give you more room in the cockpit area and it will be more comfortable and handle much better than ones on a Ford Chassis that many are plagued with handling problems that can be fixed at some extra expense.

Good Luck with your choice.
