DEF (diesel exhaust fluid)

I don't have to buy DEF often as we have a 16 gallon tank (235 gallon fuel tank).

I want to ask those of you who buy DEF at the truck island, do you find that the fuel handle constantly cuts off? It will allow me to put in about 3/10's of a gallon then cut off. Sometimes the handle won't allow me to start after 5-6 clicks. I have to repeat and repeat until it's full.

This has been my experience since I started buying DEF, doesn't matter which fuel station. I just want to know if it's just me or are these fuel pumps quirky.

(please, hold your comments that you are glad that you don't have to buy DEF) Thanks

Safe travels,

That's exactly where I was, at a LOVES station (no love) LOL!

I have found that the pumps that shut off every 10th of a gallon or so need a magnetic collar put onto the pump nozzle. I have also found that most of the people working at these fueling stations do not know what I am asking them for. One of the cashiers finally asked me if I wanted the "spacer" for the DEF pump. The spacer was actually the magnetic collar.

Dave17352, I have probably filled with DEF 4 or 5 times in 10 months.

Next time I fill up, I'll try and pump it slower. Since the pump clicks off every few seconds, it's hard to tell when I have filled the tank unless I watch the gallons pumped closely. I over-filled it yesterday as I had some DEF coming out an overflow tube under the coach.

I recall that I did have a DEF pump once that worked smoothly. The constant clicking-off gets old.

I've got 16K on my coach and only was able to find DEF at the pump once where it was convenient or even available. It was Seven Feathers Casino in Oregon. The pump worked fine, but the hoses sure get nasty fast. By the time I pulled it out there was a cup of dried DEF on the ground. I do like the price better at the pump, but it's just not convenient for me and where I typically fuel.

Just curious, do drive a lot of miles. I would be worried about filling it full if you do not drive a ton of miles. DEF has like a two year shelf life in ideal circumstances. If in a lot of heat it degrades faster I think. On my pickup I only put in 2.5 gallons at a time to keep it fresh. I only drive about 10 thousand miles a year though.

Some pumps don't have the magnet and you have to go inside and ask the clerk for it.

I thought that maybe the magnetic top of the DEF tank could be causing it to stop...without that magnet working right, it wont allow the pump to keep going....I'm grasping at straws Mark, but I do know if that magnet is not right, it won't let the switch on the pump start the DEF....

Haven't had an instance where it clicked off before the tank was full.

I usually forget to set the ignition key to accessory when I get out and my DEF gauge isn't working when I add DEF. I fill the DEF tank slowly with my finger on the trigger, so to speak, and don't let the pump go on "automatic".

I have a similar experience, but I find that filling the tank slower helps.
