Fixing water damage on the old Dodge (pics)

I got started on my summer project the last couple days. I found this thing on Craig's list for $100 and drove it home. It's a 78 Dodge Monaco 23' with a 440. Here's what it looked like when I brought it home.

Ok, time to dive in!

Oh man, I can't believe the huge bag of rusty screws I have already! It's actually not as rotten as I was thinking it was going to be. Just in the corners, where the screws need to be. Still so much to remove....

Malcolm,

I was quite serious in my last post about a PayPal account for you.

I have looked into it, and you must set up your side and provide your email address to us so we can post money to it. You do not seem like a man that would take 'charity', and this certainly would NOT be charity. I check this post daily and get a ton of information and enjoyment from it. I hate to see winter coming and seeing this post stop.

I know there are a ton of follower and fans out there....who'd give 5 bucks toward a shed for Malcolm to keep going during the winter?

Just a little more done today. Here's the new and improved door opening minus all the clamps. It was two 2x2s with a gap between them before. I measured it and it was the same size as a single 2x4! No sense making it harder than it needs to be.

I found another spot where a 2x4 was the answer. Now if I can get the center X'd in I'll be ready to put the foam back in and cover this floor back up!

I ran out of wood so we made a trip to Lowes for a couple 2x4s, a bunch of 2x2s, and one more sheet of 1/2 inch plywood. Then the sunshine got to us so we hooked up the boat and made a possible last river trip of the season.

I'm not sure the exact size, but here it is...

I was shocked to see it just bolted to the floor with 4 3/8" carriage bolts. I'll build some brackets to help it out. I don't want the floor sagging like that again. 😉

When I first got my Winnie and drove it, I heard a clunking noise while going over bumps. Crawled under it and found the propane tank only hanging by one small piece of a weld. All the rest was broken. I built two straps and bolted it to the floor. Noise gone tank has been there now for seven more years. By the way, one heck of a project you got going there. Keep it coming and you should be happy with the finished project. If it were mine, I would completely eliminate that front hang over and bring the front right down to the windsheild. Carl
Have worked on cars most of my life but with these new ones I seem to be getting dumber and dumber. The more I learn, the more I need to learn. I was taught old-school tactics and have many stories to tell. I also have what I think are good ideas.

I just started reading today and couldn't stop until I got to the end. For your roof vents if you frame them and cut them to fit the taper on the roof the AC and any other vent or fan would fit and seal much easier.

We have the same moho!

Very cool that you are doing the re-build. We have eternabond'd both of the side seems and all pipes, etc on the roof. We went all the way around the cab over. Replaced both vents. We love our old girl. You will have a beautiful one when you get done. Keep up the work. I'll be checking this to watch your progress.

Pretty big update today, even though I don't feel like I got much done...

Here's how the back end started out the day.

Then I thought, why not box in all these plumbing holes?

I figure it's only 1 more sheet of plywood to fix this center section, so I cut a 4x8 hole out of the center.

The doorstep hole.

Again a while later.

Here's how all the little boxes turned out in the back.

wow i have been following this from the beginning. it is really amazing what you have done. your design of the roof is like how coachmen does it, crowning the roof to shed water easier. i cant wait to see your finished product. 🙂

Nothing new yet, but I hope to remedy that tomorrow! Thanks for all the replies, they really help keep me moving on this thing. If no one knew any better I'd probably have scrapped it by now. 😉

I'll just piece the foam back together in there. I let the wife tackle this on the forward section of floor and she packed it way tighter than it ever was before.
